Nearly seven years ago we purchased siblings Kemper siblings Flo and Kemper from Pete Kaiser in Bethel, AK. They were both from Pete’s competitive racing team and the following year, Pete won the Iditarod. Flo retired a few years ago and lives with a family in southern Michigan. Kemper stayed with us and was a permanent fixture near the wood stove. He was a kennel favorite and loved his stuffies, squeaky ball, and wandering into the kennel to see who was in heat. He and Flo were both incredibly intelligent, loving and friendly dogs. Kemper was nearly 14 when we said goodbye last week, and his spot at the stove is now being kept warm by his nephew, Dr. Tim.

For over ten years we have hosted the incredible women of Trailbound Trips. We had a fantastic day of dog sledding with them last week. This adventurous group of women from the Chicago area always bring laughter, fun, and great conversation. We are already looking forward to 2026!

What a difference a year makes! One year ago Elizabeth sent me these photos to show me the dismal condition of our trails. Today we had incredible trail conditions thanks to well over 200” of snow this season! Thanks to our guests Sarah and Nico for the trail report today!

Congratulations to our NK mushers Elizabeth and Milly for completing the inaugural Hiawatha Heritage Dog Sled Race! Elizabeth (Blue, Noogie, Baboon, Turkey, Howard and Halfway) finished 4th and Milly (V***n, Comet, Becky, Cupid, Dime, Famous) finished 7th. This 30 mile race started/finished at the Hiawatha Club near Naubinway. There was a huge group of spectators and the girls loved meeting all their new race fans!

Nature’s Kennel is an observation/reporting location for the National Weather Service’s community reporting network. Since January 1st, we have received 92” of snow! 37.5” has fallen in just the past seven days!! It’s been a tremendous amount of work to keep up with it; plowing the driveway, digging out dog houses, shoveling roofs, grooming trails…over and over…while still managing to run dogs and entertain guests! What makes this even more amazing is that last winter we had hardly any snow on this date. Here are a few pictures from today and exactly one year ago. Thankfully we had blue skies and sunshine today!

Our annual MSU alumni winter adventure trip is underway! Yesterday was dog sledding and snowshoeing through a blizzard and today is exploring more of the UP (and trying to avoid yet another lake effect white-out)!

Saturday sunny fun day! While the tour dogs were enjoying the sunshine and running the 10 mile trail, the retirees/pen dogs had free time through the woods.

Zipcode has always been a bit of odd dog; never the most social with people, growly with other dogs, and just a little socially awkward. But, he has softened in his old age, and now he lives full time in the guide cabin. He snuggles in Sydni’s bed every night and talked her into taking him on a field trip to Kitchi-ta-kipi and Manistique on her day off. He had a pretty big day out and the lucky dog even got Chinese take-out! It’s just amazing how these once-sled-dogs become go-everywhere pets! We have our retiree list updated so send an email ([email protected]) if you’d like our list!

Two snow/cold days in a row means that child labor laws are no longer in effect. Nate worked hard all day shoveling roofs around the kennel. Fern walked several groups of dogs/puppies, helped to restock camp (and found the camp igloo), then led her first “guest” (her friend Avery) on a 10-mile run. What a fantastic day!

This is Charm (one of the Lucky Puppies, born 7/7/24) and his favorite activity…carrying a stick. He likes to show it off to his sister, Acorn, but she’s not very interested in carrying it around! Meanwhile, he thinks it’s the best toy ever!

When I went out to winter camp this morning to help the teams get hooked up, I was greeted by a child totally immersed in snow. It was 9 am, 0 degrees, and this kid was completely enjoying every minute.

Here’s the Monroy family enjoying lunch around the campfire at Musher’s Village! We had to cancel their trip last year due to warm weather and this year winter is not disappointing us! We’ve had a lot of families with kids participating in our overnight camp this year. It’s a great adventure for all ages and after dog sledding to camp, the kids spend the majority of their time building some amazing snow structures !

Cold weather means beautiful sunshine, fast trails and happy sled dogs. I always get frustrated when warnings get posted that people should not go outside in “bitterly cold temperatures”. We live in a world with excellent, accessible winter gear and it’s OK to go outside! Dress for the weather and enjoy everything a Michigan winter has to offer!

We do several field trips for area schools which usually consist of a kennel visit and 2 mile ride. The 7th/8th graders from Grand Marais/Burt Township decided to level-up and all the kids drove their own team on the 10 mile trail! Way to go Polar Bears!
