😍 Lake Appreciation Factoid:

According to MDC, the Upper White River basin of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas is the only place where the longpincered crayfish is found. This species can grow up to 6 inches or more in length!!

Table Rock Lake is home to a substantial population of this crayfish species. The presence of crayfish in a stream or pond usually indicates good water quality! 🎉

School is just around the corner and we're making some noise (well this here cicada is!) and sounding off with some insect education... so, let's begin!

The males and his buddies can really crank out the sound, and females respond with a noise too by rubbing their wings together (but it’s nothing like the loud sound of the males). They stay underground for up to 17 years and when they emerge they mate, the female lays her eggs in a crack in a tree and then they die. A tragic love story. Once the egg hatches, it eats tree fluids - when it’s ready - it falls to the ground and burrows in where it stays for up to 17 years - then reappears and the cycle starts again.
