So excited and honored to be asked to write an article about Goose Pond FWA and birding in Indiana for BWD! Just received my copy in the mail today… it’s definitely a stellar issue that I will likely read cover to cover. I love the formatting they did for my article. As a side bar for the article, I included links to:
Indiana Dunes Birding Festival
Friends of Goose Pond
Pleasant Grove Farm
And more.
I’ll post a couple more links in the comments, including one to the calendar of tours I’ll be offering to Goose Pond in February and March.
If you get a chance to see the article, tell me what you think. I encourage you to subscribe or check it out online.

On a drive yesterday from Indianapolis to Chicago, I took a meandering route to visit new places. My favorite of the day was the Portland Arch Nature Preserve in Fountain County (western Indiana) that provided me with nice winter birding and some really cool rock formations to admire. Future tour destination?!?

A few images from tours this past week to Jasper-Pulaski FWA and surrounding ag lands in northwest Indiana. Thousands of Sandhills Cranes are quite the sight and sound to behold. And 4 Whooping Cranes were the highlight for everyone!

Two of our cool finds at Kankakee Sands Nature Preserve on yesterday's birding tour.... we then spent the afternoon admiring Sandhill Cranes around Jasper-Pulaski FWA. I'll post those photos tomorrow.

We enjoyed beautiful weather yesterday for the first Jasper-Pulaski Sandhill Crane tour of the season. Here are a few of the images from the trip, including some notes and challenges in the comments. The next few weeks should see increasing numbers of cranes, and I have plenty of availability for tours. Right now, I'm specifically looking for people interested in registering for December 8, 10, or 11, as I have a couple interested in those days. Let me know!

I'm heading to the Dunes on Saturday for a birding tour, and there are still a couple of spots open. Join us as we look for gulls, raptors, ducks, cranes, sparrows, and more. I'm hoping for a Black-legged Kittiwake (pictured from about this time last year), but you never know which birds will show up in November! Transportation is available from Chicago if needed. One of the goals of the exploratory Puerto Rican birding tour was to find each of the 19 species endemic to the island. With the help of Julito A Salgado Velez of Puerto Rico Birding Trips, we found all of them in four days, along with over 100 other species! Here are the ones I was able to get decent photos of. If you want to go on our next birding tour to Puerto Rico, send me a message and I'll keep you in the loop!

Birding the sandy Puerto Rican coast today! Sandwich Terns hanging out on posts, Sanderlings being Sanderlings, and lovely walks along the sand. Finished up with a coconut rum and pineapple juice drink to celebrate seeing the Puerto Rican nightjar.

Kicking off our exploratory Puerto Rico Birding Tour with the Puerto Rican Owl, hotel parking lot birding (Kestrel, Puerto Rican Mango, and Monk Parakeets), and the delicious Puerto Rican plantain dish, mofongo. Trying to find all of the endemic species this week! Stay tuned…

Portrait of a Winter Wren.
Yesterday I had a brief look at this secretive species at Jackson Park, but I wasn't able to point it out to more than a couple of people before it disappeared in the vegetation. Today we heard it scolding a Cooper's Hawk that was feasting on a chipmunk at Montrose Point, but none of us were able to spot it among fallen branches. Of course, when I was working at home on the computer that faces the window this afternoon, this little darling hopped around in plain sight! It took a couple of tries, but I snuck out the door and captured a few photos before it disappeared. Keep an eye out... the Winter Wrens are starting to move through Chicago on their way south!
