U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan hosted a visit from Anaís Rodríguez Vega, Puerto Rico Secretary of the Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales and Alexis Torres, Puerto Rico Secretary of the Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Puerto Rico.

Capt. José E. Díaz, commander of Sector San Juan, presented an overview of all Coast Guard assets and operations throughout the Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands area of responsibility. The heads of agencies also reviewed and discussed various shared mission areas and opportunities to work together to promote boating safety throughout the recreational boating community, and to educate the public on bareboat charters and illegal passenger for hire operations. Furthermore, they discussed local and federal efforts to protect the marine environment, and to protect the island's maritime border by interdicting migrant and drug smuggling vessels that seek to reach Puerto Rico.

“We welcome and value our partners from the Departments of Natural and Environmental Resources and Public Safety,” said Capt. Díaz. “Today’s visit strengthens our longtime partnerships in our shared mission areas that are so instrumental to safeguarding our recreational boaters and commercial mariners and to protecting our citizens and the nation’s southernmost maritime border from existing threats.”
