A gentle reminder for those who already know and an education for those who don’t know…thanks to Mark Dodd for filling it in!
It’s time for summer, which means…digging giant holes on the beach, apparently?
This holiday weekend, do your part to protect sea turtles, shorebirds, and other wildlife. Start (as always) by turning out beach-facing lights and flashlights. If you must use a flashlight, choose a turtle-safe red LED light. Dig all the holes and sandcastles you want, but please fill them in before you leave the beach (there’s no way a nesting turtle would be able to make her way out of one this deep). Take your tents, chairs, and other gear home with you at night, and keep your dogs on a leash or close watch. If you’re ever lucky enough to see a nesting turtle, please stay far back and watch from a safe and quiet distance. Getting too close can cause her to turn back into the ocean without nesting.
And if you see our friend Mark Dodd (Wildlife Resources Division - Georgia DNR biologist and coordinator of the GA Sea Turtle Cooperative) make sure to say thank you! He filled in this enormous hole by hand.
