What a great week for these strong young teens during there “2025 Interims” at SCA. These workshops were conducted over a 4 day period thanks to the Leadership and parents at St Cecilia Academy. Our primary focus was on vigilance and awareness techniques but we practiced various defensive techniques on how to “stun & run” if ever attacked! The main lessons learned:1)You have a right to not be a victim 2)You have the right to be rude 3)Never get moved to a second location 4)If attacked, speed, surprise & violence of action is your strength…..plus there are no rules!

It has been over a decade since we (The Vigilance Group) began our annual visit to Saint Cecilia Academy to teach vigilance & self defense training to their freshman & sophomores. January 6-10th will be no different, as we teach these young coeds how to live safely in a dangerous world! Thanks to the leadership of SCA, for understanding the importance of this training workshop!

This increase in potential terrorist attacks, must be a wake-up call for all Americans! Whether it is a ride on the subway system or public transportation, or staying at a hotel in a resort area, or just going to a large gathering, whether it be a football game, church or school, everyone must be vigilant and understand the principles in self-defense in negating an attack! The Old Testament in Nehemiah 4:14, states, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes”.

This is the second school shooting where a “Clear or Translucent Backpack” might have deterred or prevented the attack! The first was 3 months ago at Apalachee High School, when the shooter brought an AR-15 in his backpack, and now this one! While we hear the “non effective” screams of banning all guns or not wanting Metal Detectors in schools, why doesn’t the various States’ Boards of Education mandate only clear bags for entry into all schools?? Every Professional Sport Teams (and Colleges) required it to enter the various sports arena. This may be the quickest and most cost effective way to help mitigate these tragedies that seem to happen all too often. For less than $15 each, these bags could make a huge difference. Oops….on two recent occasions I posted a story told about the potential “carjacking attempt” on Murray Lane. According to reliable sources today, this may not have occurred! HOWEVER, the need for all drivers to be vigilant, and to have an escape route while driving is always true. If my original post was incorrect, I do apologize! I need to fill in a few more details on this incident that I posted on My Stories this weekend. That incident was an “attempted” car jacking! The teacher stopped behind a car at this light, as she was going to turn right on Hillsboro Rd back towards Nashville. Another car pulled close behind her, so she could not back up. On queue, multiple masked men from both cars jumped out and ran towards her vehicle sandwiched between their cars. Fortunately, the teacher had left space between her vehicle in front of her, and maneuvered her car around these felons and escaped north on Hillsboro Rd. They followed her to her school but escaped when she pulled in. This woman displayed great awareness and decision making. Would you have been that vigilant? How about your teenage drivers or grandparents? Please share!

As the Founder of The Vigilance Group, I was motivated by my experiences from my 33 years in the military & AirMarshal organization, to keep American citizens safe, whether at work, play or home! The reality is most personal and/or executive protection is not available 24/7. Personal safety is personal! Knowing how to recognize danger, and how to respond, is the key to security and is a learned behavior!Seek out training, whether it’s for work or family. Your life may depend on it. This post is not about signaling out UGA and their security lapses with this tragedy. But rather, the overall lack of training, and active security measures for college coeds across most campuses in the United States! The touted “Blue Lights”on most campuses, with direct hot lines to police, are statistically failing as most crimes of opportunity occur off campus, or isolated in campus housing, and/or in desolate areas! Also, according to many colleges, these “Blue Light” phones have never been used for anything other than prank calls or getting directions on campus. Our suggestion at the Vigilance Group, is to find a professional “personal security training group” that can provide the knowledge, training and skill-set to teach your friends, sorority, or classmates how to live safely in a dangerous world! Knowing how to avoid a dangerous outcome, requires a change of mindset and is a learned behavior! It is never too late to learn.

The Vigilance Group was created 16 years, in an effort to protect college coeds from danger after a tragic abduction & murder at Auburn University! This weekend we were honored to be invited to give a vigilance workshop to the members of the Piedmont University Women’s Lacrosse Team. Many thanks to the Administration, Coaches and special PARENTS that allowed this to happen! Working with young women at the college level, and teaching them how to avoid dangerous situations, is the greatest gift we can give our children!

Thanks Nick Beres and NewsChannel5, for allowing me and The Vigilance Group to come share thoughts on the tragic school shooting at Apalachee High School yesterday! The next 48-72 hours will be critical for fact finding, so law enforcement and school administrators can find better ways to protect our children. We learned once again from an initial eyewitness, that keeping classroom doors locked during class time does save lives! We also learned that keeping the shooter and guns outside of the building is the only way to defeat a determined shooter. I suspect the rifle was hidden inside a back pack or a similar type bag. If that was the case, educational leaders must immediately consider allowing only “clear or translucent” bags inside of the school, as the NFL and NCAA have proven this has enhanced their gametime safety.

This is simply one man’s opinion for a short term solution! Long term, we as a nation must improve our intra-service and intra-school communication skills, so we can do a better job of keeping guns away from individuals that may be suffering mental health issues. I challenge our State Legislators to work on these type of problems!

This out of control “drunken rodeo”, affects every female Hospitality Worker in Nashville’s Entertainment District as well as the customers. Leaving the restaurants and bars at midnight, or later, and walking alone to your car, is not only traumatic, but simply extremely dangerous. There must be a concerted effort by the hospitality and restaurant industry, to place safety up above profit, or eventually the appeal to visitors and locals will simply go away!
