And the 3rd day arrived... We met Rosmery's grandparents, collector shepherds from the highland areas, where trees no longer grow, only grasslands. In this season they find large fruiting of Gerharthia cybaria (the Cusco mushroom), inside the ichu bushes, it is necessary to open them completely to find them and see how they have been growing hidden.
Don Vicente tells us that women are who find mushrooms faster than men.
In the town we organized a spontaneous Mushroom Festival, where they displayed different collected species and our friend Miguel Quispe Ordoñez helped us identify them through their scientific name. Late in the afternoon, we tasted the delicious mushroom capchi (vegetarian stew), mushroom solterito(type of salad), moraya (traditional dehydrated potato of the Andes) with mushrooms, quinoa chaufa (kind of fried rice) with mushrooms and their mushroom chicha (traditional inca’s drink).

"Aquisito nomas!" is "Just here!" a common phrase used a lot in mountain villages. That means the place is behind the other hill but really is further away.

In 2017, there was a Latin American Conference on Mycology in Lima, Peru, where I thought I could find all the information about edible mushroom crops. People from all over the world, mushroom enthusiasts, participated, and the research that was presented was extensive. One of the most memorable moments was when I met Albino. At first, he was a bit shy, but then he began to tell me about the strong tradition in his town of eating mushrooms as part of their meals. They even organize a feast exclusively for mushrooms, where people compete to see who can pick the most mushrooms. I was very surprised because I didn’t know such an event existed in Peru. When I heard from Albino about all the activities in his hometown, I told myself, I’m going next year.

The time for mushroom harvesting came, and I gathered all my savings to travel to Cusco in January 2018. In the town, I met more people from the area who answered all my questions and kindly showed me their work with native mushrooms. After I finished my explorations, I left the town feeling amazed and filled with joy, promising myself to return every year. Now, with that experience, after visiting the town many times, we organize the “Searching for Mushrooms in the Altitude” tour, where all the people from the town are the protagonists of this exciting journey. There, you will try and taste beautiful, new flavors… Let’s go in January 2025 in search of the mushrooms from Cusco!
