Via Appia Antica

The Appian Way, known as "Via Appia" in Latin, is one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, in southeast Italy, and was named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who initiated the road's construction in 312 BCE. Its original purpose was to serve as a military and economic route, but it eventually became a pathway for Roman expansion throughout the Italian peninsula. Today, parts of the Appian Way have been preserved and are recognized for their historical significance.

THE WANTING SPACE

The wanting space is mine now. After years of curating it with meaning, losing it all, and starting over and over again,
I’ve come back to a seated position among its relics.

The restoration that once exploded in chaotic color, now faded, has a devoted space on the walls.

Visitors stop to wonder at it. They feed upon its forms and blushing, fading tones

All around this wanting space, the rainbow dust is settled
Bodies of possibility erect within reach

The earth has never spoken of such color - where the sky is so intent and attuned

The miles of trekking above the timberline, stockpiling a vision, tuned me in to the fertile valley of the deep.

It was distance that seasoned the endurance of my heart space, and led me to this blooming meadow,

Where now I sit with what is wild and telling. Where I stay with what is still working its way to the surface.

Restaurant ratings go up a hefty notch when these babies are waiting for me. Hand-carved prosciutto is just one gem in this treasure chest trattoria.
A most obvious one lures you in as you approach its door at the summit of a dreamy mountain road linking Gallicano to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. There’s too much to report on this intimate yet gastronomically expansive and discerning favorite.
Bite by bite is the way we’ll let the savory story unfold. bonini

Capers. Aren’t they pretty? Sprouting from cracks in the ancient walls these little unripe berries are spicy and pungent and crunchy and seedy and raw. 😋

Una primavera “molto bagnata” 💦e temperature molto alte tra Luglio ed Agosto 🌡️ ci hanno fatto un po’ faticare ma siamo riusciti a tenere a bada la in maniera naturale 💚
Le uve erano perfette, e adesso stanno fermentando.

My friend and long-time partner in crime, Aurelio, in his home kitchen. His trattoria, just miles from Lucca’s medieval walls (6 Roman miles to be exact), is the evolution of culinary integrity spanning four generations. The Barattini-Tomei legacy of the last century has sustained a 700 year-old tradition of restoration and hospitality within the welcome walls of the Antica Locanda di Sesto.
