The Strange Story Behind The Spirit of Life Statue

The model for the Spirit of Life Statue in Congress Park was Audrey Munson. She was living in New York City with her mother and the man who owned the apartment house they lived in fell in love with Audrey. However there were a few problems. One is she had no interest in him, secondly he was much older that she was and third he was married. But, true story, he killed his wife so that he could marry Audrey. Well, that didn’t work out very well for him and he died in the electric chair in Sing Sing Prison about a year later. But after that, Audrey’s mother had her committed to an asylum where she died at age 104.

The Adelphi Hotel, Saratoga Springs is considered the last of the Victorian-era hotels. The hotel was built in 1877, and Joe Haedrich, author of "Haunted Saratoga: Ghosts of the Spa City" says there are hidden rooms and underground tunnels that are perfect for harboring spirits. Guests have reported seeing a lady in a Victorian-era blue dress walking the halls, and there are also rumors of ghosts making the lives of developers difficult when the building was examined in 2013 for renovations. Learn more about the Adelphi's haunted past during the Downtown Saratoga Springs Facebook live event this Saturday, October 23 at 6:30pm.
