I’m back in the office today, working through my inbox. Honestly, the past month has been one thing after another, and I could never have imagined the whirlwind we’ve experienced. Our family could use a break, but I’m grateful to refocus on what I love: planning vacations that create lasting memories.

For those who aren’t connected with me personally, my mom had a stroke on January 3rd and passed away on January 11th. Her hospital stays began on Christmas Eve and again on New Year’s Eve. In the midst of that, Mike’s dad has faced his own health struggles, including a major surgery, and the flu made its way through our household. Plus many other smaller things that have impacted us as well. It’s been a lot, to say the least.

The photos here are the last I have of my mom in decent health—one from her Christmas celebration at her assisted living and another of her Christmas shopping with Clara at Target.

A big thanks to all of my clients who have given me extra patience and grace lately, to my Pineapple Escapes Travel team who have been extremely supportive, and to all of my friends and family who have reached out and made me feel so cared for during this time. I appreciate you all so much. 💜

💜🍍💜 Why Travel Insurance (and a Travel Agent) Matter 💜🍍💜

So about that canceled flight on Sunday...

We had a 7 am flight on JetBlue from JFK to ORD. We were looking forward to landing mid-morning and having the day to prep for Christmas. At 4 am, I woke up to a text: Your flight has been canceled. And just like that, I kicked into Travel Agent Speed Mode. 🤣

We had a car scheduled at 4:30, so I opened my laptop and went to work to fix the problem. On the way to the airport, I scoured flight options. There were no flights to ORD or MDW for 5 that day. I explored every option—Amtrak, buses, and even flights to nearby cities like St. Louis or Milwaukee. JetBlue rebooked us for Christmas Eve, but none of us wanted to wait that long.

Mike said he was up for driving home. I’m not a road trip person, but we all wanted to be home. We rented a mini-van and hit the road. Fourteen hours, lots of junk food, and a few cranky moments later, we made it home by 9 pm.

Here’s where travel insurance saved the day: it will reimburse the rental car, gas, and food. If we’d stayed, it would’ve covered hotel and meals, too. That peace of mind? Worth every penny!

This wasn’t my first time relying on insurance. Over the years, it’s come through for canceled flights, weather-related issues, lost baggage, and even a Disney trip that involved kidney stones and an ambulance ride.

Finding solutions in the chaos is overwhelming, especially on your own (luckily, I'm pretty skilled at it thanks to this job!). But that’s where I come in to help with YOUR trip — to manage the behind-the-scenes mess so you don’t have to. 💜

Well, it’s been quite the Christmas…

I’m officially calling it the “Bad Luck Christmas” and hoping our streak is over since we’ve already hit the magic #3. They do say it comes in threes, right?

We had an amazing time in New York City—seeing the Rockettes, eating delicious food, and soaking up all the festive vibes! It was a wonderful trip with my four favorite people. But our bad luck started bright and early at 4:30 am when our flight home was canceled. 😝 After trying every airline with no luck, we ended up renting a car and driving home. And if you know me, you know road trips are not my thing. 😬🤪 But we made it home, safe and sound.

Then came Christmas Eve. Before I was even out of bed, we got a call that my mom was being sent to the ER for breathing issues. Our plans for cookie baking and festive cooking were replaced by trips to the hospital. She’s still admitted but doing better, and we’re hopeful she’ll be home soon.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Clara woke us up at 4 am on Christmas morning… sick. 🤮 Our Christmas plans with Mike’s family were canceled, and while we made it through stockings and gifts (with plenty of breaks), it wasn’t the day we’d envisioned. And tonight, Anna joined the sick crew, and honestly, I think it’s just a matter of time before it gets us all… 😬😭😝

But despite all the chaos, I’m still so grateful—for my family, for thoughtful friends, for Christmas cheer, and for the chance to be home with my kids when they need me. It wasn’t the Christmas we planned, but it was still good.
