I almost missed posting in the month of at Bryce. One of my very first memories as a child at Bryce Canyon was at Sunset Point, only 3 years or 4 years old! (the little one sitting on the ground by my cousin and my mom and dad standing (around 1965). I have been in love with this place ever since. I feel thankful to live here and enjoy it often. My maternal Grandfather was a gifted stone mason, who worked on the Bryce Canyon Lodge, and built the Pine Creek rock bridge in Zion National park. He passed his love of Bryce to my mother, who shared it with all 8 of her children. For 40 years, I have loved Bryce Canyon alongside my husband and our 5 children and now with our 10 grandkids. Six years ago, at 55 years young, I decided that I wanted to officially share it with others and started I hike and share this place with people from all over the world and will continue to appreciate every time I can hike down and especially up out of this magical place. The Hoodoos give me energy and there is a special renewing feeling here, my spiritual place! So when asked, “Hoodoo You Love?…you can guess the answer!

Whenever I am showcasing this magical place, I like to share this special spot for snapshot of everything Bryce Canyon is in a nutshell. In this capture, you can see trees, the amazing variants of colorful limestone, the whimsical hoodoos, the valley where Ebenezer Bryce homesteaded and of course the layers upon layers starting from our eastern landmark…Aquarius Plateau…bonus, even a little bit o’ snow! Thanks to being at the right spot at the right time…the sunset was working “Unusual Beauty” to the east as well as the west!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the many memorable tours this season, with my guests who became my friends, while visiting Bryce Canyon.

As snow blankets my beloved Bryce Canyon, I am reminded of this thought from Kahlil Gibran "Kindness is like snow. It beautifies everything it covers."

May kindness and love follow you and guide you through this beautiful season and into 2022!

Have you ever suffered from altitude sickness? Did you notice any effects from Bryce Canyon's high elevation during your visit?

❤️ Today is World Heart Day, which makes it a great day to talk about altitude, the human body, and some Search and Rescue trends we've been seeing.

🗻 With elevations averaging around 8,000 feet (2438 m) and reaching up to over 9,000 feet (2743 m) Bryce Canyon is a high altitude park. Though it's not too far away in mileage, that's nearly 4,000 feet (1219 m) higher than the Visitor Centers at Zion and Arches.

⬆️ The higher you go, the less atmosphere there is pressing down, and the further apart oxygen molecules spread. As a result, at 8,000 feet effective oxygen levels are about 75% of what's found at sea level, and as oxygen falls the risk for altitude sickness goes up.

💨 Even mild exertion in the park is likely to cause you to breathe faster as your lungs work to acquire oxygen and your heart to beat faster to better move that oxygenated blood through your body. Your hydration will suffer too from increased urine output and dry air.

📈 While these responses are normal, in the last few weeks we've responded to a number of visitors suffering from more acute altitude-related symptoms. Some of these have required park Search and Rescue responses--especially on Navajo and Peekaboo Loops--one including a medevac helicopter landing within the Bryce Amphitheater.

🤢 Altitude sickness often begins with dizziness, headache, muscle aches, or nausea but can quickly become more serious. And while this can affect absolutely anyone, those with preexisting heart conditions, risk of stroke, COPD, and other chronic illnesses carry an elevated risk of complications.

💧 What can you do? Stay hydrated (aim for a gallon a day and avoid alcohol), limit your exertion (5 miles at Bryce is likely very different than 5 miles at home), and if you notice early signs of altitude illness begin heading to lower elevations.

🩺 If you have concerns about how exerting yourself at higher elevations may affect you, we recommend speaking with your doctor before you visit.
