I’m a girl who unexpectedly fell in love with a quilt pattern nearly 25 years ago at a sidewalk sale, bought the pattern, a dozen prints, and then taught myself how to make it. Completely smitten with my new hobby, I entered just the third quilt I’d ever made in a national contest hosted by American Patchwork & Quilting magazine, won the contest, and began publishing my designs with my fourth quilt.

Soon after, I worked up the courage to follow my dream of writing a book and made a proposal to Martingale, who had produced several quilting books that I admired. No one was more surprised than me when they accepted my proposal and, about 20 years ago, my first Simple Blessings book was published.

What does a 20-year career as a quilt designer and book author look like? It looks like this - more than 20 books, several themed compilation books, and numerous quilting calendars and paper products! I’m so very thankful to Martingale for helping me turn a hobby into a passion, and then a dream into this unimaginable career.

Martingale’s decision to close their doors marks the end of an era and makes me incredibly sad, but I respect, understand, and support their decision. I’ll always be grateful for the many opportunities they’ve given me.

Way Back Whensday ~ I know it’s too soon to be longing for spring, but I’m longing for spring! I’m so tired of the white stuff that I couldn’t pass up this flowery photo of Warm Regards from my Simple Friendships book with Jo Morton - it makes me happy! This quilt lets you dabble in a lot of different things … mixing and matching prints, easy patchwork blocks, a bit of appliqué, and yo-yo’s for a little handwork time. My best tip for stitching yo-yos? Sew them with a size 5 embroidery needle and perle cotton, and you’ll have sturdy gathers that never break! ✂️🧶🪡✂️

Way Back Whensday ~ Sampler quilts are so much fun to make because instead of stitching a bazillion-and-one of the same block, you sew a little of this, a little of that, and then fit all the parts and pieces together like a cloth jigsaw puzzle. This scrappy mini “This and That” sampler from Simple Whatnots III is even more approachable and doable because the small size means that you can see the finish line right from the very first stitch!

This is my favorite type of seasonal quilt because when you piece it in a rich palette of harvest or yuletide colors, but not obviously holiday prints, it’ll take on the tone of whatever decor it’s paired with and become your quilted bestie all through the wintry months - even beyond Christmas! This approach to seasonal quilts gives them so much more longevity, and they can hang with you long after the Santas and stockings have been packed away.

Finally finding time to mingle the quilts from my Simple Double-Dipped Quilts book into my home. Yay! When we built this house more than 20 years ago I envisioned this upstairs hallway as a perfect place to hang quilts, and it’s had a mix of at least six of them folded over its rails ever since. It’s so much fun blending different styles and colors together, and of course I have to give each one a little pat as I walk by because they feel as soft and comfy as they look. 😍
