Today marks the 20th anniversary of Max Wine Tours—two decades dedicated to providing exceptional experiences for our guests at remarkable wineries. What initially began as a weekend endeavor to provide relief from my desk job has evolved into a lifetime of cherished memories in what I consider to be the most fulfilling profession. I estimate that we have taken about 12,000 people from every corner of the world!

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this journey, and I look forward to future engagements with many of you.

130+ year old wine of Alicante Bouchet. This variety gained popularity during prohibition, as wineries sold wine grapes and yeast in a box for home wine makers. Catholics were also allowed to make one barrel of wine per household per year, and the census show a dramatic increase in Catholics during prohibition. Alicante Bouchet has an extremely thick skin and could survive the long train ride to the East Coast.

Switching Cabernet Sauvignon that wasn’t performing well to Chardonnay.

“Field grafting, also known as top-working, is a process that allows grapevine producers to change the grape variety of existing vines without uprooting and replanting them. It involves joining a shoot system (scion) from one cultivar or species to the root system (rootstock) of another plant. The scion contains multiple buds, and the only requirement for grafting is viable contact between the scion and the rootstock’s cambium layer, which is a single layer of cells located just below the bark.”

New vines at Oakville Crossroad. For the first year, they are protected from hungry rabbits and strong winds in these mini sheath greenhouses. They will also make the vines grow up nice and tall to reach that first wire. I remember when they were all milk cartons.
