Trek, a poem by Karina Watson
1 It started one winter, when strangers arrived,
Mike leading the way, a journey contrived.
2 In winter they rode, braving the cold
The Top of the World to the city of gold
3 Then Lori and Eric, honed in on the fun
And since 94, it has been a planned run.
4 The journey is hectic, not for feint of heart
Gather your wits and at Tok ye shall start.
5 Through wild open spaces, dips, curves and cravases
Only stopping in Chicken to get us some gases
6 With the utmost of care, to set down the track
The Sled Dawgs have gone to the border and back
7 While Trail Blazer's groom the American side
Then bring up the rear to ensure a safe ride
8 On Arctic Cats and Polaris they come
Skidoos and Yamaha all completing the run
9 The warming tent what a welcoming site
Let's everyone know they'll make Dawson by night
10 The first sled arrives, the silence is broken
The streets come alive with good will and jokin'
11 Exhausted and weary they dismount their sleds
So much to do, not yet time for your beds
12 A whole weekends planned, not a moment to waste
Let's start with some fireball, perhaps a small taste
13 Gertie's is open, for those with the luck
This gambling hall might make you a buck
14 Martinis, martinis what a start to the day!
Bombay Peggy's is open to show us the way
15 We have firemen grilling with style and flare
Cooking the steaks with great culinaire
16 After our dinner it's the Downtown we go
Might just have to try that there sourtoe
17 There we'll see riders just giving it heck
We'll know in a minute who is king of the trek
18 Where else in the world can you watch a sled drop
It falls from the sky, where did this year's stop
19 The den of the Dawgs is the Elderado
When starting the Poker Run here you must go
20 Play Pull a Plug and fill out your ballot
Or grab your swag as here they do sell it
21 Hawaiian night is a place for goodbyes
It's also a chance to win you a prize.
22 Gertie is here to perform for the crowd
Her girls will kick higher if you're really loud
23 Up on the stage there arose such a clatter
Shufflers arrived, you could tell by the chatter
24 This bevy of babes are here to perform
A fav of the Trekkers they take it by storm
25 Like moths to a flame, we flock to the pit
We'll close the place down, no doubt about it
26 Then crawl from your beds, Sunday dawns a new day
What a long ride ahead when ones feeling this way
27 They jump an their sleds and put them in gear
Amongst all the noise we still manage to hear
28 Thanks for the memories, friends near and far
See you next year, we'll meet at the bar
