We had such an awesome time on the water with our guests yesterday! Bald Eagle sightings are always a highlight, and I'm thrilled to have noticed a residential nest has 2 eaglets in it. 🦅

It's Wildlife Wednesday - Let's talk about Yellow Crowned Night Herons! This is our first sighting of the year, and a sure sign that Spring is on the way. 🌿

I'm fairly confident this stunning pair is going to be setting up shop at a long-standing nest around the corner. It's natural for these birds to return to generational nesting sites year after year. Late last summer, we spotted some juveniles in that very nest, and you wouldn't believe how well they can camouflage!

Adults have slate-gray feathers, a distinct black head with white cheek patches, and bright red eyes. Their offspring look so different, you might not even guess they're the same bird. It takes them about a year to molt their speckled and striped brown feathers—perfect for blending into their surroundings while they grow and mature. I’m excited to see if this pair will return to the same spot!

Two Yellow-crowned Night Herons spotted on this week’s paddle! No sign of nest activity yet, but their arrival feels like a promise—spring is on the way!!

We had some fog this week, but kept it rolling with guests who were excited to get on the water. Seeing an otter pop its head up against a backdrop of thick fog—so dense you couldn’t see downriver—was a such cool sight. Pictures cannot convey how calm and quiet it was that morning. 😌

off to a foggy start but cleared up nicely as soon as we hit the water 🐬 dolphins and amazing guests made the day absolutely perfect 🤙

05/02/2025

we got off to a foggy start this morning, but it lifted quite quickly and revealed the most beautiful day! amazing guests made it even better 🌞 we saw it all—pelicans gliding in formation, a breathtaking bald eagle, and plenty of dolphins! 🐬 nature never fails to inspire, but it also reminds us of its challenges. We were fortunate enough to see many happy & undisturbed manatees, but sadly, reported a deceased one to FWC—later we learned cold shock was the cause. This beautiful day was a reminder to stay vigilant and aware. If you see wildlife in distress, text FWC at 847411. 🦅 *manatee shown in this video is not the deceased or distressed manatee*

It's Wildlife Wednesday ☀️ let's talk about Turkey Vultures! They're able to soar large distances without flapping their wings by riding thermals—rising columns of warm air created when the sun heats the ground. They circle within these currents of air to gain altitude, gliding from one thermal to another, expending little to no energy. When conditions are perfect, they can soar for hours without a single flap. The cold weather definitely tuckered this one out, and I was thrilled to get a shot of it yawning. 💤 Some say they're "ugly" but I admire the outfit: as natures best custodian, cleaning up dead stuff can get messy, so it only makes sense that their head is bare and unfeathered. I've observed that Turkey Vultures (brown feathers, red skin) are smaller and hang around the waterways, whereas Black Vultures are larger (black/grey feathers, dark scaly skin) and are more often seen eating roadkill around town.
