While it's very tricky to forecast wintry weather in the south, especially over a week out, we are picking up on trends that its 'possible' next week. The CPC has highlighted much of the region with a 'Slight Risk (~20%)' for heavy snow between January 9-10.

**Right now it's just something to watch! There’s a good chance that nothing happens and it's just cold.**

We have plenty of time to iron out the forecast between now and then. More updates are to come...

Little things mean alot. Confidence increasing that precipitation is likely Thursday night & Friday next week. Euro model leans toward a warmer rainier system, but the GFS continues to show rain, snow, sleet & freezing rain/ice possible for the region. Regardless, it's going to be very cold, but a degree or so either side of freezing will make a world of difference.

Shout out to Refill Jackson Initiative's Green Corps (RJGC) crew for marking West Jackson storm drains that lead to the Pearl River and raising awareness about the connection between storm drains and our local waterways. "RJGC is an environmental, workforce-training AmeriCorps program serving West Jackson. RJGC is sponsored by AmeriCorps Mississippi, and Entergy's Environmental Initiatives Fund, with founding support from The Corps Network, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, and an AmeriCorps National planning grant. RJGC was created to provide Opportunity Youth in Jackson with career exploration, wrap-around social services, and nationally-recognized workforce credentials such as OSHA-10, while completing flood mitigation, water quality, and neighborhood improvement projects in our West Jackson community." Learn more about RJGC here: https://refilljackson.org/refill-jackson-green-corps/. Thanks, team!

Why do leaves change colors? Many people believe frost is the reason, but that’s actually a myth!

🍃During warmer months, leaves create food for tree growth. The process takes place inside of plant cell structures called chloroplasts, which contain the pigment chlorophyll. This explains why the leaves are green during spring and summer!

🍂Fall brings shorter days and cooler weather, which brings this food-making process to a halt. The green chlorophyll breaks down, and golden-colored leaves begin to appear instead. Other chemical changes may occur, which result in different leaf colors like orange, red, and even deep purple.

🌧️These leaves last briefly before fall winds and rains cause them to drop. The cells that hold the leaves to the twigs become weak because the food-making process has slowed down. That’s why leaves drop easier in the fall than in the summer when trees are actively creating food for growth.

❄️Leaf-shedding helps protect trees by making it easier for the tree to handle any snow and ice collection that may happen as the weather grows colder.
