Iceland is famous for its quaint towns and rugged natural beauty.

Nicknamed the “Capital of the North,” Akureyri is set at the end of the Eyjafjördur and enjoys a mild climate, unusual for a northern city just 100km from the Arctic Circle.

Folk culture is robust in Akureyri; the Vefarinn dance was invented here to celebrate the harvest.

Other points of pride include the Public Park and Botanic Garden, where some 2,000 plant species grow, and the hilltop Akureyrarkirkja, the local church that is home to a stained glass window that originated in a church in London, England, prior to World War II.

From you can visit the Mývatn Nature Baths - the soothing waters contain a blend of minerals, silicates and geothermal microorganisms that are beneficial to skin and spirit alike.

Take a dip amid clouds of steam in a pool of geothermal water drawn from depths of up to 8,200 feet, experience a steam bath with natural geothermal steam rising through vents in the floor, or simply relax in the alkaline bathing lagoon.

Akureyri is best explored in the summertime.
