The group will be small, limited to 12. The point of our trip is simple: travel in a method that gives you better experiences. We will be passing on tourist traps in favor of sites of cultural interest. We will be using public transport when possible, showing you how independent travelers navigate. We’ll stay at small hotels and family-run guesthouses and eat where the locals eat. Our pace of trav

el will be slower than a typical group which will allow us to gain a deeper understanding of each place. Our travel leaders have years of independent travel experience and will be sharing their tricks of the trade.

We’re working on the last details for our upcoming Dance Your Joy retreat in Amorgos in the Cycladic Islands in Greece. I love looking at older travel books to see how locations have changed over the years. I don’t want to tell you what Lawrence Durrell said about Amorgos in 1978, though. I can tell you from experience he was dead wrong.

The Alappuzha Backwaters houseboats in Kerala, India, are often referred to as "Kettuvallams," which translates to "tied boats." This name is derived from the traditional method of construction, where these houseboats were assembled using wooden planks tied together with coir ropes, without the use of nails.

This eco-friendly construction technique has been passed down through generations and is a testament to the local craftsmanship. Today, while many houseboats have modern amenities, they still retain the charm and heritage of the traditional Kettuvallam, making a journey through the Alappuzha Backwaters a unique and culturally rich experience.

The specific seafood ingredients can vary depending on regional preferences and seasonal availability, but common choices include tuna, salmon, shrimp, squid, octopus, and various types of sashimi.

The second day of the Eagle Festival had far fewer spectators but much more excitement than day one. The crowd was more local, with lots of young people asking for selfies with us and wanting to practice their English.

The eagle hunting competition continued with a much smaller field of competitors after about 3/4 of the 130 entrants were disqualified in the first event (eagle calling). The second event was the chirgai chase, where the hunters dragged a fresh animal carcass behind their horse and called to their eagle to land on it. After that event, the young 13 year old girl was in the lead, and presumably won, though we left before the final announcement.

After the chirgai, all the hunters were invited to participate in the K*k Bar - a particularly gnarly tug-of-war between two men on horseback, each holding onto two legs of a freshly decapitated goat and trying to pull it from the other’s grasp. I’m not sharing any of those photos or videos at the moment but it was exhilarating to watch.

The competition was fierce, with more than one bout going to extra difficulty rounds, first holding into just one goat leg each, and then holding on with the non-dominant hand.

The testosterone levels were high, and a fight broke out between two of the top competitors that had all the hunters chasing up the hill on horseback.

Once that settled down, but before the K*kBar was over, it was time for the Kiz-Kuar, where women chase the men on horseback and whip them. All in good fun. But to add to the silliness, the final rounds of K*kBar continued in the center of the field while the couples rode in circles around them.

At the end of the day, we left with a feeling of amazement at what we had witnessed, and warm memories of the people we met.

And then of course there was shopping.

This may or may not make you want to join us for a future trip. A bumpy jeep ride over dirt roads and no roads through a rocky valley to see ancient petroglyphs.

Today was one of those travel magic days that happens sometimes when you least expect it. It didn’t start well. We left our hotel at 3:30am for a 6:20am flight to Ulgii in western Mongolia where we will attend the Golden Eagle Festival this weekend. At 5:55, they told us the flight, and all of the days flights, had been cancelled due to snow at the destination. Within moments, our excellent local guide had a new plan for us to visit Hustai National Park in the steppe lands just west of Ulaanbaatar, to try to see the Przewalski Horses, a species of wild horse brought back from extinction in the 1990s. It’s a fascinating story of how this was done, and we were fortunate to see dozens of them in the park, as well as red deer, marmots, and buzzards. Now please send all your travel juju to get us in this afternoon’s flight west. Our other option seems to be a 32-hour bus ride, and nobody wants that. But we will do it if that’s the only way west!

We had a very full day exploring Mongolia's capital, Ulaan Baatar, visiting the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, eating Mongolian barbeque, drinking salty milk tea and lacto fermented vodka, watching throat singers and contortionists, and shopping for cashmere. Tomorrow we head west to Ulgii for the Golden Eagle Festival.

We don't usually post videos here but there was no way we could have captured the charm of Quartier Latin in Pétionville by Port-au-Prince. This was part of the Spellbinding Evening nightlife tour hosted by Pierre "Bobby" Chauvet, pictured here getting caught up in the rhythm. What do you think? Would you go?
