Major Instagram Changes Are Rolling Out: What Marketers and Creators Need to Know
Rumors are swirling about Instagram’s latest updates, with some users spotting taller images on their grids while others still see the classic square format. After sifting through countless speculative posts and blogs, we found that Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s CEO, has shared valuable insights into these changes on Threads.
If you ever have questions about Instagram updates, I highly recommend following Mosseri’s profiles on Instagram and Threads. He consistently provides clear and transparent answers, often responding directly to users’ questions. Mosseri stands out as one of the most candid leaders in the social media industry.
📲 The Big Update: A Taller Grid
Mosseri revealed that Instagram is indeed rolling out a taller grid format. He explained that most photos and videos shared on the platform are already formatted this way. The taller grid aims to align with the dimensions of Stories and Reels, creating a more cohesive experience for users.
As with all new features, Instagram is testing the update with a limited audience. However, this rollout didn’t come without its challenges. When the new grid was introduced, many users noticed their existing grids looked messy due to cropping issues. Acknowledging this oversight, Mosseri announced plans to release tools that will allow users to better customize their grids.
💡 What’s Coming Next?
To address user concerns and enhance functionality, Instagram is planning to introduce several new tools and features:
🔹 Customizable Thumbnails: Users will be able to adjust older square images, ensuring the crop makes sense within the new grid format.
🔹 Highlights Tab: Highlights will move to a dedicated tab for better organization.
🔹 Grid Reordering: You’ll have the ability to reorder posts on your grid, giving you more control over how your profile looks.
🔹 Direct Grid Posting: A new option to post content directly to your grid.
💡 Transparency Moving Forward
Mosseri emphasized that these updates are still in the testing phase, meaning they’re subject to change. However, due to the strong feedback from users about grid disruptions, he’s making a conscious effort to share plans to prevent future surprises.
I'll share updates as they are available and stay tuned as I'll also be providing some insight into the impact the multiple Meta measurement changes will have on your 2025 analytics.
In the meantime, to answer everyone's burning question, YES, you need to update your social media templates and image sizes. Also, plan on addressing Highlights and Grid changes as customization features become available to you.
