Well it’s officially Spring by all standards. The birds are chirping, our hospital is full of baby rabbits and squirrels, and the Osprey have returned from their wintering grounds.
The Osprey pictured here was feeling particularly energized. So much so that she dropped into the middle of an industrial communications pole. We are not exactly sure how she managed this, but our best guess is that she was working on a nest atop the pole and somehow lost her footing and slid down the interior. Either way, the access point was too small of an opening for her to navigate through and she desperately needed a helping hand to free herself . Our rescue team was able to safely use a long net (with guidance from utility workers) to capture her from the outside and gently work the net through the opening.
She had no visible injuries and was so eager to resume her day she actually popped out of our rescuers hands and took flight on the spot. We would have loved to do a more detailed field assessment, but this bird was clearly in a hurry and in good spirits. Our team observed her soaring overhead for an extended period and felt confident she was in no need of further assistance.
We are grateful that we had the the opportunity to help, and hope she will find a more suitable nesting spot to start her family. Osprey tend to nest on tall structures that provide enough surface area and stability to support their LARGE messy nests. Often times electric and utility poles fit the bill, and despite the providers best efforts they may thwart the humane deterrents put in place. Occasionally this can cause problems for the birds and the customers so intervention is needed to keep everyone safe.
Thankfully this incident did not involve an an electric pole (it was reportedly communications equipment), however nesting in power lines is not uncommon. If you are on Cape Cod and have concerns about Osprey nesting on the power lines you can report it to Eversource by using this new website below. We and several other partners have been working with them for the past two years to help develop an efficient and humane reporting system to address Osprey safety concerns.

Thank you and happy Spring!
