The shipyard team does it again! The 88 ft. St Aquilina recently underwent extensive retrofitting in Sitka. We’re proud of the work this talented group of men and women do to ensure the utmost safety and guest comfort on our tours.
Bubble net feeding! 🫧 🐋
Here’s how it works: First, the whales dive deep below a school of fish or krill. Then, they swim in a tight circle, blowing a continuous stream of bubbles from their blowholes. This creates a curtain of bubbles that rise to the surface, effectively trapping their food inside.
Next, the whales swim up through the center of the bubble net with their mouths wide open, engulfing the trapped prey in one massive gulp. This strategy ensures that the prey are concentrated and easy to catch, allowing the whales to feed more efficiently in a shorter period of time.
Bubble net feeding is an incredible example of intelligence among these magnificent creatures. It requires excellent communication and coordination within the group, as each individual has a specific role to play in the feeding process. This behavior is rare to see but we are always amazed every time we are lucky enough to see and share with guests! 🪩🫧🐋💙

It has been an exceptional few days on the water! These orcas were being playful yesterday while the St. Nona was coming back from Misty Fjords.
**There is nothing like hearing the excitement of our guests onboard! ♥️

The Hubbard Glacier is one of the largest and most active glaciers in Alaska. It measures about 76 miles long and 7 miles wide at its terminal face, and it is up to 600 feet tall above sea level.
The Hubbard Glacier is unique in several ways. It is the longest tidewater glacier in North America, meaning it terminates at the ocean and calves icebergs directly into it. It is also one of the fastest-moving glaciers, with a speed of up to 80 feet per day. Additionally, it experiences frequent surges, where it rapidly advances and then retreats. This makes it a particularly dynamic and impressive glacier to see in person.
We hope if you’re onboard a ship cruising through Hubbard Glacier you join us onboard!

Meet Lee (conducting training exercises in the video) who works in our Ketchikan division and started with Allen Marine in 2010 as a guest services crewmember. Lee worked his way up through the ranks in Ketchikan and has been a deckhand, an assistant port engineer, a captain, a senior captain, and the Ketchikan port engineer. Now Lee is the Ketchikan operations manager! Many of us at Allen Marine have held multiple positions, but Lee has one of the most impressive lists.
“I grew up in Southeast Alaska and spent most of my childhood on and around the water. My dad was a captain with Allen Marine! After working in inventory control, I decided to work for Allen Marine because it sounded like a fun career path. The thing that I value most about working here is the opportunity for growth within the company.
My advice for incoming crew is to learn as much as you can about everything you can. The potential for career advancement is enormous for those that have the desire to learn new skills.”
