Italy Beer Tours Travel to Italy with the writers of the book Italy: Beer Country. Visit the breweries that started E This is Italy, afterall. Italian food culture is well-known.
(1)

Italy Beer Tours was founded by Bryan Jansing and Paul Vismara in 2014. After writing the first book about Italian craft beer, Italy: Beer Country, the pair wanted to share Italian beer culture with craft beer lovers from around the world. The only logical way to arrange a tour was through both beer and food. Less known is how Italians eat with a drink in mind. More and more they are choosing beer

as the accompaniment to their fine food. In fact, beer, not wine, is the beverage most consumed outside the home. Surprised? There are more surprises to come, which will shatter preconceived ideas of Italians, especially when it comes to craft beer. Paul and Bryan want to take you to the heart of this new, thriving culture in the old world.

BYOA bring your own aperitivo

A short train ride out of Catania brought us to a small little town on the coast, there was a castle and a wedding underway so we stopped for a beer. The owners were gracious enough to pour us a beer and let us drink outside while they finished their beer tasting course.

Craft beer is not lacking in Italy, you just have to be willing to go out there and find it.

I can't believe we haven't talked about Alder Beer Co. yet. Officially opened in 2019, and after 3 short years, founder and brewer Marco received the Brewer of the Year award in 2022 at Birraio dell'Anno!

🍺Green Lobster Hazy IPA is a solid IPA
🍺 Zelena Bohemian Pilsner is a must drink for aperitivo
✔️IMBISS Schwarzbier is my favorite treat

Tap room is open for visitors just north of Milan, but many of their beers can be found on tap all around Italy! If you know where to go 😎

Two months ago, we led a Sustainable Beer Workshop and Tasting for a group of farm interns at an agriturismo in Tuscany. We tasted delicious beer from…Birrificio War, Ca' del Brado, Claterna, Birrificio Maso Alto, Bibibir, Crak and Birra dell' Eremo. is a great example of what we would consider to be a sustainable craft brewery.

🍻Crak Brewery - Italian Independent Craft & Farm Brewery located in Padova (Padua for American friends), opened their brewery doors in 2015 and has been changing the craft beer scene in Italy for the last eight years. They offer beers on draft in their TapRoom, including a Garden and Garage for summer night hangs. In their independent farm they cultivate their own barely, and their orchards grow fruit 🍒🍑🍐to be used in sour and wild ales, aged in the Cantina.

🍺Guerilla is their prized IPA, but honestly, everything they brew is ⬆️top notch.

Independent craft beers are not always easy to find around the major city centers, that's why we encourage taking a tour with us! Or at least letting us help you find them around 🏛️Rome, our hometown.

Italy often falls into the trap of tourists expecting the same curated experience of wine, pasta, long lunches, and over-priced spritz. It's 2024 people, slow/sustainable travel is in and so is supporting local businesses. On your next trip to Rome, instead of ordering a bottle of macro lager, seek out craft beer made by good people.

Hilltop Brewery, started in 2014 and is located in the town of Bassano Romano, about a 45 minute drive from Rome's city center. They brew a variety of beers styles ranging from classic to creative - Barry's Bitter is a traditional English Ale, and their Gallagher Stout is a Irish Stout brewed with smoked seaweed.

What does craft beer have to do with slow/sustainable travel, you ask? Small businesses support other small businesses. Breweries like Hilltop are family owned, they even make beers utilizing all Italian-grown ingredients, further supporting other small Italian businesses, and their beers are served in craft beer bars and pubs in Rome.

How do we get people to start realizing that there is more to Rome, than the city center? Do something different on your next trip to Rome, visit a brewery, yeah Rome has breweries, a few actually.

Jungle Juice fully opened in 2016, they not only make beer for bars around the city, they also have a tasting room which offers 🍺beer, and 🍔food! You can also book a guided tour of the brewery and learn for yourself about why we love Italian craft beer so much. 👍👍

We get it, a brewery tour is probably not the first thing on your list on your first visit to Rome, but it is an incredible way to see a different side of the city. If you are nervous about the language, book a tour with us and we will be your guide!

Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fá is chant from Rome's SS Lazio soccer fans, a taunt for visiting fans when their teams are getting crushed that translates to, "But what the hell did you come here to do?" Macché, located in Trastevere, one of Rome's oldest boroughs, is among one of the best pubs in Europe. They use a tap system that is adequate at the time for the style of beer they are serving, pouring beer with a nice thick head on top, in the correct glasses. They continue to widen the bar with more taps, Four become eight, and eight become twelve, until the taps reach the full length of the bar. On most nights, patrons spill into the street outside because there simply isn't room inside. Macché will come to define the Italian tap house.

⬆️⬆️ Excerpt from my book Italy: Beer Country. Our journey began in 2012, with weeks spent visiting Italian breweries and pubs interviewing brewers, beer judges and writers while slowly uncovering this incredible scene. We discovered the passion and dedication these men and women needed to forge what is now the most creative beer culture in Europe.

We usually end our tour at Macche because it is the quintessential craft beer pub that represents what the industry is all about. Community, quality beer and no fuss.

If you're in Rome and craving a fresh IPA (not a macro beer brand IPA that has no doubt lost its hops) try Parrot Invasion 🦜🍺West Coast IPA. Rome is not the original habitat for bright-green colored birds, however many stories go back and forth between how their population grew and came to be in the first place. Regardless, parrots are here to stay and so is craft beer.

😎This west coast IPA is a staple IPA around craft beer bars in Rome!

Basta with the macro lagers.
Drink local craft beer.

Italian Beer always get's pigeon-holed into the lager category. I.e Italian pilsners which not only dominate the marketplace, but also the consumers idea of what Italian beer is. Italian beer to us stands for craftsmanship, culture and a respect for traditions while not being afraid to experiment. The Italian craft beer industry wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for a brave few. Calling themselves craft brewers before there was such a thing. Ca' del Brado - comes from Bradus, a Greek word for slow, and Stato Brado in Italian translates to "been wild" or a wild state. Therefore beers produced by Ca del Brado aim to showcase the wild nature of long, unconventional fermenations resulting in beers that are complex, unique and dare we say an excellent representation of how good things take time.

For your reference, typically lagers take about six weeks to brew, while wild fermented beers can take months (sometimes years).

For those planning your next trip to Italy, consider putting aside a day or two to learn about the thriving craft beer scene in Italy. Italy has more to offer than what is seen in mainstream media. Learning about craft beer from the guy who wrote the book on the subject is a good place to start.

Cheers! To more beer education in 2024! The more you know, the better you drink.

📷

PS: They wrote a great piece in detail about Ca' del Brado and it's worth a read!

Did you know Italy Beer Tours also organizes educational workshops? Check out our recent line-up of beers we tasted at with their awesome group of interns! We discussed the topic of sustainability in the Italian craft beer industry, history of Italian beer, the differences between macro, micro, craft beer, birra artigianale and birra agricola. It’s a complicated topic, for sure, but all the more reason to dive into it!

We tasted delicious beer from…

Wine has been on the Italian table for more than a millennium. While beer is regarded as a thirst-quencher for laborers. So putting beer on the table is like putting your feet on the table. Beer at best, is something to drink with pizza, like Coke with a hotdog.

The concept of Le Baladin incepted when Teo Musso was only 22. His father gave each of his sons 10 million lire (8,000 dollars) when they decided to leave home. Teo decided to use his allotment to open a bar in Piozza. This bar was the anti-Italian bar of the time. Beers from Belgium, Germany and England, and on Wednesday’s when the most soccer matches were playing, they would have live music. Who will show up on what is the equivalent to Super Bowl Sunday to hear live bands and drink exotic beer when there are pivotal matches to watch?

We feel the need to remind the world that we wrote the book when it comes to craft beer in Italy, quite literally.

🍻As a great beer scene should, Italy’s is growing with each passing week. As time goes by, it will become easier and easier to find good, if not great beer whether you are traveling in Italy or searching your local beer shop. When you are done reading the book, get in touch, we would love to show you all the places included in the pages in real life. Until then, drink craft! 🍻

📖Included are some of the kind words written by our friends in the foreword of the book.

It’s that time of year again 🍇vendemmia! There is definitely more to Italy than just wine…

Some of our favorite producers are known for making delicious beers like IGTs (Italian grape ales), saisons and other styles while utilizing grapes from their region.

Just to name a few! We’ll share more on the blog soon.

PS: grapes are not the only delicious fruit that can be added to beer!
