Please join us in welcoming Lauren Kleppin to Wildland! Lauren joined us this month as the new Deputy Operations Manager for California.
While she may be new to Wildland, Lauren is no stranger to wild places, outdoor recreation, or the guiding industry. In addition to 15 years of varied experience, Lauren brings a love for the mountains of California that she calls home, and an eagerness to share them with anyone open, curious, and ready to explore.
Let’s plan a California adventure! 🏔 🏕 🌌

“The Lost Coast offered plenty of opportunities to watch a lot of different wildlife. I picked this trip because it is located on the Pacific Coast. The sound of the waves was a great way to get lulled to sleep at night and the scenery did not disappoint.
I booked the trip solo. Our group was small, just one other guest and our guide Austin. I typically hike with other women (my husband doesn’t hike) so sharing this experience with two men was new for me. But it turned out to be a great experience!”
A basecamp style trip splits the difference between a multi-day backpack trek and an inn-based adventure. Based out of one campground the whole time, enjoy thicker sleeping pads, roomier tents, more elaborate meals and - actual toilets! (Although in varying degrees of "rustic").
See and do a lot, while also enjoying the pastimes of a slower pace - campfire stories, card games, s'mores and stargazing. California has 9 basecamp trips to places like Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Lassen, and Yosemite.
“My wife Courtney and I signed up for the Yosemite AutoCamp Summer Tour. We booked for a chance to unplug and explore together, but it turned into a trip we’ll always remember. The airstreams and vibes at Autocamp were awesome, perfect for returning at night to recharge our batteries. It was close to camping, but with all the cozy creature comforts.
Every morning we would get picked up in the lobby for a new customized hiking experience. Our guide Carm was incredibly kind, funny and knowledgeable. On top of all that, she was an excellent chef. Even when her "kitchen" might take place on top of a mountain or deep in a forest.
The park itself was breathtaking—every hike and viewpoint felt like a postcard come to life. This tour pushed us further out than we would have gone on our own and turned our vacation into a real adventure.”

A picture is worth a thousand words - especially if it’s taken by a skilled photographer. Wildland guide Dakota is that and more. He’s also helped to grow our Moab operation by running countless high quality basecamp, backpack and inn-based trips in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. But we’ll let his photos from the field do the rest of the talking…

“I can honestly say it was the best trip of my adult life to this point. We love to travel and spend time outside! We love new adventures and are always up for new experiences, particularly in nature.
Everything was amazing, the hikes, the accommodations, our guide, the food, and the way everything was organized and executed. We had the best time doing everything as a hiking group, loved the other 2 women on our trip and all got along well.”
Did you know we offer 2 women’s adventure trips in Utah? Explore the canyons of Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument on a Women’s Coyote Gulch backpack or visit Arches and Canyonlands National Parks with a Women’s Best of Moab Basecamp.
“I was surprised by how remote and untouched the area felt. One day, we didn’t see another person, which made the experience feel incredibly special and unique. I was also amazed at how refreshing walking in the Paria River was. It turned out to be a blessing on such hot days. Finally, the camaraderie among our small group and how much fun we had together was a pleasant surprise.
I traveled with my friend, Antoine. We also had an incredible guide, Fletcher, and were joined by two fantastic companions, Jim and Mitch (a father-and-son duo). Their company made the trip even more memorable: great conversations, lots of laughter, and shared whiskey at the end of the day!
I’ve done some hiking before, but this was my first time on a multi-day backpacking trip carrying everything I needed for several days. It was a learning experience, especially in adjusting my backpack and pacing myself in the heat. But once I got into the rhythm, made some adjustments to my pack, and got used to the conditions, it became much more manageable.
Advice for someone else considering this trip:
Google 'What are wag bags?' I’m not going to explain what they are here. Let’s just say that this hike requires that you know what they are used for. The only thing I can tell you is that they’re not as bad as they sound and can provide plenty of comedic moments during the trip.”

Utah is a hiker’s paradise. We would wax poetic about scarlet sunsets, towering canyon walls, and graceful stone archways, but why not let the superlatives speak for themselves. Utah by the numbers:
National Parks: 5
National Forests: 7
National Monuments: 9
State Parks: 46!

"Seeing things from the bottom and top of Zion makes for a really immersive experience. Some of my favorite pictures came out of the Narrows. It's very interactive, not a typical hike on a groomed trail.
Wasn't expecting it, but I was fascinated with the geology and beauty of Bryce. It's like nature's sandbox, slowly eroding over time, and I'd tell anyone who appreciates it to get there as soon as they can.
Also, in all my treks with Wildland, it's fun and refreshing to vacation with people who have similar expectations and appreciate a good walk. Thanks for an incredible trip!"

"Canyonlands National Park truly exceeded my expectations—its rock formations and trails were unlike anywhere I’ve ever hiked. I was constantly amazed by the unique landscape, with its towering rocks and the holes in the stone that formed shapes and figures. At times, I found myself imagining what cartoon characters I could create from the patterns in the rocks. If I were a cartoonist, this place would be an endless source of inspiration for creative ideas!
Although I wasn’t hiking alone, I was the solo hiker in a small group. The first day was a bit challenging—especially since we had to carry all our water to the campsite—but it turned out to be quite manageable after that. Once we reached our base camp, the rest of the trip was much easier. We stayed in one campsite for the duration, so we didn’t have to move tents each day. This relaxed setup made it easy to enjoy the incredible scenery without the hassle of packing up every morning.
It was a peaceful and reflective journey, and I was really impressed by how different Canyonlands is compared to other parks I’ve visited."

In March of 2009 we ran our first Utah trip, a Coyote Gulch backpack. We ran a total of 4 Utah trips that year for a grand total of 9 guests... and just over $10,000.
Last year we ran 312 trips in Utah for 1,308 guests and just under $2.3 million. That’s a whole lot of growth, a lot of hard work, and a mathematically incalculable amount of scenic charcuterie spreads. This month we hope to introduce you to just a few of the folks who helped make this feat possible.

Our Story
Wildland Trekking was born from a love of wild places. From the beginning, the founders envisioned Wildland’s purpose to be facilitating a deep/er love of wilderness in guests. Guiding 10,000+ guests annually in America’s and the World’s most amazing wild lands (Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Utah’s Canyon Country, the Great Smoky Mountains, Patagonia, the Andes, Iceland...etc.) the Wildland Team has remained as passionate as ever about fulfilling its purpose!
With humble beginnings in 2005, Wildland was breathed to life in one of the founder’s garages with a meager marketing budget of $250/month. Since then Wildland has expanded to now include 8 regional domestic offices/warehouses, 175+ staff, 40+ vehicles, 10,000+ annual guests, more than 60,000 total guests, and 5-star status on 8 Trip Advisor pages!
The founders - Steve Cundy, Brad Ball and Scott Cundy - continue to be heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of the company as well as the broader aspects of navigating Wildland into the future. But fortunately they are far from alone. With 30+ incredible in-town staff supporting the trips behind the scenes, the guides are the most visible of a complex and dedicated web of professionals working tirelessly to provide you with an unforgettable hiking vacation.
The guides - who ultimately are a huge part of Wildland’s “product” - are some of the most passionate, dedicated staff imaginable. Wildland is truly blessed with an amazing team of people.
With a variety of trip styles and many, many destinations, we have something for everyone who loves to hike and/or explore stunningly beautiful wild places. We hope to see you soon!
