"We have traveled the world with our kids since they were born (Nico is 19, daughter Mari is 17). Once they were old enough to walk we'd take them on short walks, then day hikes, then camping. Being outdoors as a family offers a distraction-free environment and a special quality of time not easily replicated in today's busy world.
A couple of years ago when he was a Junior in high school, Nico suggested we try a Wildland trip together. We hadn't done any backpacking before and I thought it would be a great thing to do just the two of us. We ended up booking the Palisade Glacier trek. That trip was super, though it made me realize I needed to be in better shape in order to fully enjoy, rather than just survive, the experience.
This catalyzed a life change that would not only benefit me on the trail, but in almost every aspect of life. I was 58 when we did the Palisades trip. When we got back, I got a personal trainer 2X per week, took up golf (also with Nico as something else to do locally together), and switched to a healthier diet. 2 years, 25 lbs less, and much improved cardio condition later, we did the Indian Pass and the Divide trip this summer. What a difference! Truly enjoyable.
Nico is in his first year of college now and we are planning next year's trip. Being alone together for a week in the wilderness with no email, phone, texts, or social media is such a resetting experience. We would end up talking about things that we did together years ago, things stored away that we hadn't remembered or thought about for a long time. I'm sure this will be a tradition that Nico will continue with his own family in years to come. Thanks Wildland for all the great memories and the motivation to make positive changes!"
