Maya Field Workshops On-site seminars and tours in Maya archaeology, epigraphy and history led by noted Mayanist David Stuart. It's also great fun for everyone involved.

Maya Field Workshops are open to anyone with a keen interest in Maya archaeology and history. We're not a "tour" operation in the conventional sense. Instead, for one week we stay at one major archaeological site such as Copan, Palenque or Tikal, and directly experience the latest insights about its history and archaeology. Each workshop is run by leading Mayanist Dr. David Stuart of the Universit

y of Texas at Austin, a noted archaeologist with long experience in the Maya area, and who been at the forefront of hieroglyphic decipherment for over three decades. Participants learn how to read Maya glyphs, understand Maya art, and place it all in meaningful context.

Given its location between Tikal and Calakmul, it's no surprise that Uaxactún played a major role in the centuries-long “Star Wars” conflict between these two great powers.

Listen to David’s interview today at 5:30 PM EDT on All Things Considered on NPR stations.

On Friday April 21 David will be interviewed on All Things Considered about the recent discovery of an inscribed ballcourt disc at Chichen Itza -- the first inscription to be found there in several years. The segment with Scott Detrow will air around 5:35 Eastern time.

The stone was found recently in Chichen by archaeologist Lizbeth Beatriz Mendicuti Pérez, working on the Chichen project directed by Jose Osario and the Francisco Perez.

The disc is hard to read, but clearly a dedication maker for a ballcourt. It includes a date, a “ballcourt glyph” and probably one or more historical names. It’s hard to read. Dave hopes to see it in person later this year.

Boundary End Archaeology Research Center is sponsoring a symposium on the current state of research of Inka Empire khipus. One hundred years ago Leland Locke published The Ancient Quipu or Peruvian Knot Record, a seminal work in the study of the khipu, the communications system of colored and knotted cords utilized by the peoples of the Andes in lieu of a script-based writing system. In celebration of this centennial, the Boundary End Archaeology Research Center (BEARC) is pleased to present this one-day public symposium in which seven khipu scholars will discuss the current state of research, from the khipu’s possible origins in the Middle Horizon (ca. 600–1000 CE), through its importance in the Inka Empire, to its continued use in contemporary times.
