"A man named Don Carlos Berry brewed “Berry’s Beer” starting in 1836 in a log cabin at the site, according to information compiled by Thornton historian Debbie Lamoureux. German immigrant John Bielfeldt acquired the land and built a brewery in 1857, and a brewing tradition was maintained there for nearly a century, for a while in defiance of federal law."

Andy Howell, a founder of Thornton Distilling Co., says an underground mineral spring near Thorn Creek is a source of clean, cold mineral water that attracted immigrants who brewed beer.

Our Story

Our story began almost a decade ago when Bruce moved into a walk-up apartment building on Diversey Parkway on the border of the Lakeview & Lincoln Park neighborhoods on Chicago’s north side. Little did he know at the time that the street was named after Michael Diversey, a German brewer who moved to the city during the 1800s and became one of the Chicago’s first and most prolific brewers. Soon enough, however, the colorful history of Chicago’s brewing past seeped into his mind, often with a cold beer – and perhaps some bacon from Paddy Long’s - in hand. After being laid off from his corporate job during the recession and taking a tour guide job with Chicago Food Planet Food Tours, a company was born.

Bruce learned that one of the best ways to discover Chicago is by combining the stories that created it – history– with beer, especially with the great craft breweries that have opened up in recent years. By adding in the most important ingredient: people, including tourists, passionate tour guides, staff from the places we visit, and others in the neighborhoods, we have created an experience that we believe and hope many people enjoy.

Now, with three tours in Chicago, we are able to combine our true passions: people, Chicago and its history, and beer. In addition to Lakeview & Lincoln Park, we offer tours in the trendy Bucktown & Wicker Park neighborhoods, and are opening up our newest tour right downtown in the Loop and South Loop in spring 2016. While each tour offers different content, establishments, and feel, they all share a similar overall format.

We really appreciate you touring with us and hope you have a great time discovering Chicago through beer!
