While in Bonaire, we rented a golf cart and toured the southern part of the island. This route took us by so many beautiful things! From my previous post, you can see that we stopped at some beaches, saw the crystal clear water (no wonder it’s rated highly for SCUBA diving and snorkeling!), saw the famous flamingos 🦩 in the nature preserve, the slave huts, kite surfers, and so much more! But one of my favorite things (and honestly, this video or my pictures don’t do justice to the beauty I saw with my own eyes!) was driving by the salt flats and see the PINK ocean water on one side and the gorgeous BLUES on the other side of me! It was AMAZING and something I highly recommend you doing for yourself one day!!
So, you may be wondering, what makes the ocean PINK?!?! Here’s your answer:
The waters by the Bonaire salt flats appear pink due to the presence of a type of salt-loving algae called "Dunaliella salina". This algae produces a red pigment in order to absorb sunlight more effectively, and over time accumulates in the salty water, giving it a pink hue. This natural phenomenon is a popular sightseeing attraction in Bonaire and makes for some great photo opportunities
