Today we celebrate one of the more underrated, yet one of our favorite animals to see on safari. Happy World Painted Dog/African Wild Dog Day!

There are an estimated 6,000-7,000 individuals left in the wild and are by far one of the rarer species to see in the bush. With one of the most interesting social structures and a matriarch leading the pack, any encounter with these beautiful animals is a memory that lasts forever.

One of the reasons the Maasai Mara is one of our favorite safari destinations are the plethora of big cats- especially the fastest land animal of them all.

A safari to the Mara with and not seeing the beautiful Acinonyx jubatus, or cheetah, would truly be rare.

When are you making the journey to Kenya?

We were incredibly fortunate on our last safari through the Mara to spot not one, but four servals during the course of the 6 night safari in the Mara!

Our guests even found a pair together at the same! We theorize that the female was in heat because it’s quite rare to see one serval, let alone two at the same time.

These beautiful cats are often mistaken for juvenile leopards even though the biggest males barely top out at 20kg.

Let us introduce you to one of our favorite sounds while on safari 😍

It’s a common misconception that only male lions roar! Both male and female lions roar to show health and strength, but not all roars are territorial. They use it to communicate their location with other pride members.

Lionesses also roar to communicate with males during the mating period. Not all roars are the same, but they all are a key part of a lion’s social life.

Have you ever been lucky enough to hear this iconic sound on safari?

The threats to East Africa's magnificent savannas come in many forms and Amboseli faces most of them. By far the gravest danger lies in the fragmentation of the 10,000 square kilometer ecosystem and collapse of the migratory herds of zebra, wildebeest, elephants and pastoral livestock.

The seasonal migrations and movement of wildlife through habitats of the Amboseli Basin each dry season has kept the savannas productive and animals able to ride out droughts and recover in good years.

The migrations and free-ranging movements of wildlife and pastoral livestock in response to local conditions and each other have allowed them to coexist in the Amboseli ecosystem for millennia.

There is no better way to directly contribute to the conservation of ecosystems like Amboseli than visiting these beautiful areas of wilderness!

The “Adumu”, or traditional Maasai jumping dance is famous in Eastern Africa and renowned by travelers lucky enough to experience this cultural tradition.

In the adumu, Maasai men form a circle, one of them enters inside it and they jump, as high as possible, as smooth as possible, as elegant as possible.

The goal is for their bodies to remain in a narrow pose and their feet should touch the ground as little as possible.

The higher the jump, this signifies the stronger the individual and the demonstration proves he is worthy of respect and admiration from the women of the tribe.

Come see for yourself and join us on safari in 2022 😁

A thank you to all of the rangers, scouts, and anti-poaching units for all of their hard work in the field and the massive sacrifices they make every day for the conservation of African wildlife and the natural ecosystems they reside in.

Without them, the animals and environments that we love to experience would cease to exist.

The ecosystem of Amboseli National Park is unparalleled in its own rights- no other destination in Africa combines its unique hydrology, topography, geological and rich cultural history.

Although Amboseli boasts of modest rainfall, there is a collection of swamp, marshlands, and savannah fed by the Kilimanjaro mountain forest catchment that supports an incredible collection of aviary and mammal life.

Amboseli is renowned for the healthy ecosystem it supports and most famously a population of some 1,500 African elephants that are known to have some of the biggest tusks in Africa.

Trekking with the Mountain Gorillas is easily one of our favorite wildlife experiences in all of Africa. There is no feeling in the world like being in the presence of these incredibly intelligent and social animals.

It is also a proven model of sustainable tourism evidenced by the slow, but steady rise of the population of Mountain Gorillas as a whole (just breaking the 1,000 gorilla mark in recent years).

Local villagers endemic to the Bwindi area have also benefited from job creation and aid. Without Gorilla Trekking, these animals would most certainly lose their habitat to deforestation and human encroachment.
