Well, it’s that time of year that business slows down. We are off to North Carolina for a little while to help with the clean up of Hurricane Florence. On our second day in the Wilmington area we were very lucky to find this adult Franklin’s Gull! It appears to be the 2nd or 3rd Ebird record for New Hanover county!

A fun filled weekend with many good birds for our 2 day tour. 14 marbled godwits, Eurasian wigeon, canvasback, cave swallow, barred owl and more. With strong south wind all day Friday and Saturday, we still tallied 105 species.

What a day for a tour! An incredible fall out of migrants this morning, fore-fronted by an influx of sparrows and Eastern Phoebes. We saw hundreds of sparrows, dozens of Purple Finches, Phoebes and Kinglets and had flyover Pine Siskins. To top it all off, we had a fly over EVENING GROSBEAK!!! I felt truly fortunate to be able to join our group of 2 and share the experience with them.

Today we had beautiful weather and great bird participation on a privately guided walking tour of Nummy Island and Stone Harbor Point.

40 species of birds seen and lots of fun was had! A few unexpected sightings were that of an American Pipit and a couple of juvenile White-crowned Sparrows. The best shows were probably put on by the sandpipers though, they are hard to beat with close range high definition views through the scope.

Today was the first ever kayak tour on Fishing Creek Marsh. Fishing Creek Marsh is a specialty kayak trail that is a rare fresh water marsh located in Cape May County. Although bird abundance is often lower here, we normally encounter some hard-to-get species and today did not disappoint. We had a Sora a cooperative and close Solitary Sandpiper and two Wood Ducks. Early morning outings produce good numbers of Sora and Virginia rails at this time of year.

Although not the greatest pictures, we had another exciting uncommon bird sighting this morning, a male Wilson’s Warbler. Often warblers are up high in trees and difficult to identify because you can only see the underside. Wilson’s Warblers look an awful lot like yellow warblers but they are black under the tail whereas Yellow Warblers are yellow throughout from the throat to the tip of the tail. In addition the side angle photos show the darker wing coverts that Wilson’s show as compared to Yellow Warbler that has black primaries but mostly yellow coverts.

A beautiful Philadelphia Vireo was seen on our walk this morning at the Cape May Point State Park. In spite of its name, only a few of these are seen each year in Cape May, so this was a special bird to find on an otherwise slow morning for songbird migration.

Today, while scouting for a private tour booking tomorrow morning, a Swainsons warbler was discovered at Higbees Beach WMA. There are very few records of this species in New Jersey in the summer breeding season. For more details please visit this link for a recap of Toms scouting this morning:

6/25/2018 - Free opening tour at the Cape May Point State Park - We had a turn out of 4 people, and the wildlife was great! We started off in the lighthouse parking lot next to the hawkwatching platform where we had excellent study of the Purple Martins repeatedly carrying food to their nests. As we were observing, we got lucky and heard a singing Black-billed Cuckoo! It was coming from nearby just around the corner after the first stretch of trail from the parking lot. We decided to see if we could locate it, and unfortunately it was well hidden. Black-billed Cuckoo are typically a rare species of breeding bird in New Jersey with no reports at all from Cape May in the post migration season this year. As we continued, amazingly we heard what was almost certainly another individual Black-billed Cuckoo singing from about a mile away from where the first one was heard. This made for a rather remarkable morning, we had not 1, but 2 singing which indicates that there were probably 2 males on 2 separate breeding territories! This second individual was way beyond the gate and off of the State Park property, so we had no chance of getting a visual on that one. As for the rest of the walk, we had copious numbers of Ospreys and Cardinals, a Pine Warbler and a Green Heron to name a few. Sightings of a few neat damselflies including Familiar Bluet and Citrine Forktail were noted along with the larger dragonflies, Common Whitetails, Blue Dashers and Eastern Pondhawks. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed seeing some personal first time sightings of wildlife! Please join Tom soon and get in on the fun!
