RIVER CRUISE 101 - Last Day! 😢

But, trust me, AMA saved the BEST day for last! The final day was all about TULIPS🌷 Keukenhof Gardens was the highlight and the focus of our trip. It did not disappoint! Thus, please enjoy this photo dump of the extraordinary and most beautiful tulips. ; ; ; ;

RIVER CRUISE 101: Day 6!

Only one more day left! Time flies on a river cruise. 😊 Today, we had a very Dutch day - a visit to Delft and the Delft factory, where the blue delft dishes are made, and a trip to see the windmills of Kinderdijk. We had a very cool and windy day at the windmills, but learned a lot and even got to go inside one.
We finished off the day with a wonderful meal at the Chef’s Table. It is special dining experience that each guest can enjoy once per cruise at no extra charge. We had the whole venue to just our table with a wonderful view of the river.

We travel to Norway, Iceland, and Alaska at certain times of the year in hopes of seeing spectacular Northern Lights. But no traveling required to see these! What a rare treat! Hoping for more tonight.

RIVER CRUISE 101 - Day 5!

We're winding down our Tulip Time cruise. Remember - on a river cruise, you are docking somewhere every day, so there are no lost days in sailing (usually). On the 5th day (4/18) we visited Antwerp, Belgium in the morning, and in the afternoon we chose the tour of Floralia (flower exhibition) in the gardens of castle Groote Bihnhoof near Brussels. Other choices were a waffle, beer and chocolate experience or explore Antwerp on our own. We really enjoyed Antwerp. It was such a nice surprise! While there, we bought chocolate and lace and visited the Cathedral of Our Lady. On the way to the Floralia exhibtion, we went through Brussels and went right past the King and Queen of Belgium's palace - an unexpected bonus! ; ; ;

RIVER CRUISE 101 - Day 4!

This was a fun day (4/17) to visit two beautiful towns in Belgium - Bruges and Ghent. After a scrumptious and filling breakfast on the ship, we had the choice of 4 different tours: 1) Highlights of Bruges and Ghent 2)Ghent walking tour 3)Bruges and Church of our Lady 4)Belgian Chocolate Workshop! YUM!! As much as we wanted to do the chocolate workshop, we wanted to see Bruges more, so we enjoyed Belgian waffles, frites (french fries), Belgian chocolate shopping and beautiful canals and scenery in Bruges.
On ship, after an awesome dinner, AMA outdid themselves with a Belgian chocolate fest buffet for dessert. Yes, I ate too much!!

RIVER CRUISE 101 - Day 3!

On Day 3, we traversed a lock, and we had a front and center view from our breakfast table overlooking the bow of the ship. In the afternoon, after lunch, the ship arrived in Bruinesse, Netherlands and we had a choice of a Delta Works visit, a tour of Zierikzee, or a bike tour of Zealand. We chose the walking tour since that day was windy, with off and on rain. We had a fantastic dinner (it was also my birthday that day), and the crew sang and provided me and my table of friends with one of the best chocolate birthday cakes any of us had eaten!

RIVER CRUISE 101 - Day 2!

On day two, we sailed to Hoorn, Netherlands. Like most days, we could choose from at least three excursion options - each included. Hoorn was a quaint little town that we saw on the way to our visit to see a massive tulip production operation. We were amazed by the technology and innovation used by this family run tulip farm.
We returned to the ship and were greeted with hot towels and hot mango tea. Then, another wonderful dinner and a fun Orange party to celebrate the upcoming King’s Day (Koningsdag) - an orange filled annual celebration of the Netherlands King’s birthday. ; ; ; ;

Day One of RIVER CRUISE 101! Follow my posts for day by day descriptions of what a river cruise is really like. I’ll detail my time onboard the AMA Lucia Tulip Time cruise covering The Netherlands and Belgium.

Boarding the ship was easy, and not remotely like boarding an ocean cruise line. Easier than walking into a hotel and getting your room. Go to the lounge, where you can get a drink and snack, and they call when rooms and luggage are ready. For us, only a few minutes. See pictures and captions for continued description of Day 1! ; ;

Finishing up a wonderful river cruise on the AMA Lucia in Amsterdam. Today we ended with a visit to Keukenhof Gardens. What a spectacular show of beauty!

Getting ready for an international trip? Here are a few things to do before you leave:
1) contact your credit card company to let them know where you’ll be traveling and when.
2) make sure you understand whether or not your credit card charges foreign transaction fees. (You should check this well before you leave)
3) contact your cell phone provider to find out about international calling and data; or buy eSIM plan if you are planning to use your cell phone while on travel.
4)don’t neglect travel insurance! You may think you won’t need it, but what will you do when you do? You can usually purchase travel protection up to your trip, in most cases. But it is much better to buy as soon as you make the first deposit on your trip so you are protected immediately.
5) place a mail hold if you’re not going to have someone you trust pick up your mail.
6) download the airline’s flight app for your trip. It will make your experience much easier.
7) pack your patience! Getting to your destination takes time and there are a LOT of people traveling these days.

MOST IMPORTANT: locate your passport and make sure it has not expired and will not expire less than 6 months before your last day of travel.
