Aug. 14, 1805 William Clark, while traveling up the Beaverhead River first recorded present day Grasshopper Creek. Meriwether Lewis noted information passed to him by Capt. Clark that "... they passed the entrance of a bold creek on Starboard side 10 yards wide ... which we call Willard's Creek after Alexander Willard one of our party." Fifty-seven years later, the name would change when John White and a group of Pike’s Peakers discovered gold in July 1862. Not knowing the creek had been named by the Lewis and Clark expedition they named it Grasshopper Creek for the swarms of the insects along the bank. The town of Bannack would spring up as a result of the gold strike.Aug. 14, 1805 William Clark, while traveling up the Beaverhead River first recorded present day Grasshopper Creek. As Ranchers trail cattle to the high country, please remember to be GATE aware, if you open a gate, please close them! Cattle graze the high altitude pastures reducing fire fuels, therefore allowing fresh chutes of vegetation to appear that the wildlife feed upon in the fall and spring. Leaving gates open creates herds to mix and go beyond designated boundaries or into rested pastures. Happy adventuring!

I know many posts have been about moisture, but the extreme drought in South West Montana is not good. Medicine Lodge creek on the South end is dry until you get to Dad creek. We have algae growing in creek at our house because of the low water flow. Fire danger will be very scary, please use caution.

April has blessed us with snowfall and cool temperatures...the tiny chutes of green grass are beginning to show themselves and wildlife have begun to migrate into the low country. Heavy winter ice flows stop truck travel just above Hildreth Livestock.
