TSA tightens rules of powder in carry-on bags

The Transportation Security Administration is cracking down on the carriage of all powder at gateway airports.

Security officials said the agency will conduct more detailed screening of powdered substances in carry-on bags on international inbound flights.

The TSA says it is in line with security procedures for domestic flights which already employ stricter rules for powdered materials.

Starting June 30, passengers transporting 350 milliliters (12 ounces) of powder - about the equivalent of a soda can - will be required to go through additional screening and may be subject to a test for explosives.

It applies to all forms of powder including cosmetics, food mixes and baby powder.

Passengers are being advised to put all powder not required during a flight into checked baggage.

The added measures are to combat substances such as fentanyl, pepper spray and explosives.

Overseas departure airports serving the US with direct flights will employ the enhanced screening measures.

"TSA is communicating with our international partners to ensure last points of departure airports align with Pre-Clearance requirements and our domestic procedures as part of our efforts to raise the global aviation security baseline," TSA spokesperson Mike England said.

Packing: A wise rule is to pack lightly. And put identification on all luggage inside and out. Be sure to remove any and all old destination tags before you leave your house. You will also want to check luggage cost and requirements for each trip. Each Airline charges are different and can change without notice. I personally would take a picture of my luggage as well, the day before your trip to show the condition of your luggage just in case.

Medication and Travel: It is important to make sure that all personal prescriptions are carried with you in your carry on. We recommend that you make sure that you take more than you need in case you need to stay unexpectedly. You do not need to carry them in your prescription bottles but if you don't we suggest that you carry with you the details about your prescription. Also make sure you have written down all medication allergies handy with medication. If you get sick while traveling it can be stressful and this will make things a lot easier.

Sad to say that another cruise line is charging room service fees for late night room service. Carnival Cruise Line just announced that it will be charging $2 & $6 per item between the hours of 10 pm - 6 am. The other cruise lines that are also charging fees are Norwegian Cruise Line $7.95 which started in 2015. Sometime this year Royal Caribbean's fees will start at $7.95 + 18% gratuity and Celebrity Cruises says it will charge a $4.95 fee between 11 pm - 6 am.

With airlines charging for luggage now it is good to make sure it is light and sturdy because they WILL charge you for anything over 50 pounds. When traveling out of the USA make sure you have notified your credit cards that you will be using them in a foreign country. You will also want to make sure they do not charge you an International Currency Fee. There are plenty of credit cards that do not charge fees so call until you find one that will not charge you. If you prefer to travel with cash make sure you order the currency that you will need 2 weeks before you leave from your bank. And make sure you get small bills so that you don't get short changed.

VISA'S: A travel visa is an official government document that temporarily authorizes you to be in the country you are visiting. Many countries require a visa to gain entry. If you are traveling on a tour or cruise the company usually will let you know what is required. Also your Travel agent can help you with your application and the proper time to start the process and how much it will cost. The visa usually is in the form of a stamp or sticker placed IN the passport and is obtained from the country you are visiting.

PASSPORTS: What can I say, if you want to travel you need a passport. There is the misconception that if you can drive there all you need is a birth certificate. That is false. To get over the boarder into Mexico or Canada you will need a Passport and to fly into any foreign country you need a passport or possibly a Travel Visa. So we recommend having one.
