Why Vultures are the only full time Scavengers?

While most carnivores scavenge on occasion, few species can make a living of it. Infact, among all known vertebrates, only vultures are the obligate scavengers. How did vulture manage to thrive on a lifestyle that no other vertebrate has figured out ?

Large Soaring fliers: Aerial scavengers outcompete land based ones mainly because their height and vision allows them to scan much more rapidly for a carcass. Soaring is hugely beneficial over flapping flight even after accounting for reduced speed as soaring allows vultures to cover vast distances with minimal energy.

Social Network: Vultures are plugged into their scavenger social network and look to other vultures to spot aerial thermals. These thermals can be often fickle and inconsistent but with right thermal they can just spread their wings and soar. Social networks also provide information on carcasses as they look for other vultures returning from a meal or descending onto a carcass from a great distance.

Corrosive Acids: Vultures stomach acid is more acidic than car battery acid and about 100 times more acidic than human gastric juice. This allows them to safely digest rotting carcasses that contain toxins and bacteria like cholera/anthrax that could be lethal even to other scavengers

This high ratio of information gain to energy spent and powerful gastric juices along with other adaptations have allowed vultures to live as full-time scavengers, while other species can only manage it part time.

Story of Lake Amboseli

Lake Amboseli is a cracked and dry pan that occasionally floods for short periods following long rains. Some years, it remains totally dry. But did you know that till a few thousand years ago, this was a huge lake that extended right upto the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro!

What happened to this huge lake? How did it form and how did it change into the lake we see today?

Over 2 million years ago, a large river flowed southeast through Amboseli and joined Indian Ocean at Tanga city. When Kilimanjaro emerged around a million years ago, its volcanic activity & bulk blocked this river and cut off its outlets.

A large lake - Lake Amboseli was born.

For around a million years, the river deposited sediments in the lake and Kilimanjaro added volcanic ash with its eruptions. Eventually most of the lake got filled with sediment and the river was redirected into Tanzania (Today’s Pangani river).

Salts that were washed down by the river into the lake for thousands of years continue to have a profound impact on the ecology of the area. Thousands of flamingos flock to this alkaline lake after heavy rains, making it their temporary home and adding to the dramatic scenery of Amboseli.

Kilimanjaro’s tango with Amboseli National park

Mt Kilimanjaro is more than just a permanent fixture on the horizon of Amboseli National park.

On one hand, the mountain blocks rain bearing clouds from reaching Amboseli plains, making it into a near desert region.

On the other hand, glaciers from its peaks and rains from its forested catchment percolate through porous volcanic rocks and bubble up in Amboseli basin as springs to form swamps and marshes.

These swamps form the lifeblood of the park and sustain a wide variety of animal life including elephants, hippos, buffalo and numerous birds.
