Ever wondered where it all began for Discovery Map®? Pictured below is the original "Who's Where" map, lovingly hand-drawn by Bud Sibley back in 1974 for Felix von Moschzisker's local "SCENE Scene" paper in Vermont's picturesque Mad River Valley.
This simple map sparked an idea that blossomed into a company devoted to capturing the unique spirit of communities across North America.
From those humble beginnings to a brand people cherish, we're proud to continue showcasing these wonderful destinations and supporting local businesses and tourism!
We'd like to shoutout Susan McKenney Klein, our Finance & Administration head honcho here at Discovery Map® HQ, who’s returning from an incredible cross-country road trip with her husband, Karl! 🚐✨
They hit the road in their Airstream trailer and captured some seriously awesome moments along the way.
Highlights include: A bison sighting (safely from a distance, of course), Mt. Rushmore looking stunning at night, and some absolutely gorgeous Montana scenery.

Behind the scenes at Catamount Color!
Our very own Rebecca had a blast touring the facility where our beautiful Discovery Maps come to life. She even got the inside scoop from Tim, who's retiring soon (Happy retirement, Tim!).
Did you know our maps are printed on a giant web press, which means continuous printing?
The process is fascinating:
✨Four-color magic: First black, then blue, magenta, and yellow inks layer up to create vibrant colors.
🔥💧Heat & hydrate: A 300-degree oven sets the ink, but the paper gets a little thirsty, so it's re-moisturized with a silicone roll.
✂️Snip, snip: Finally, the maps are cut to their perfect size.
Offset House/Catamount Color prints lots of maps across the country, especially our smaller 17 x 22 inch versions. They're true experts in their craft!

Attention Sarasota lovers! ☀️
A new Discovery Map® is on its way. Nicole Guidi and Ellen Christman are launching Discovery Map® of Sarasota, bringing you the inside scoop on all the best eats, attractions, and local gems.
The pair first met as friends, then owners of property management franchises in Colorado. In 2019, Christman sold her franchise to Guidi and moved to Sarasota. In 2023, Guidi purchased a Discovery Map franchise in Breckenridge, Colorado. When Nicole’s father moved to Sarasota County, the pair reconnected and began talks of starting a Discovery Map in Sarasota, with Ellen as managing partner.
“I’d been doing some consulting after I moved to Florida but was looking for something a little more substantial that could also work with my teenage daughter’s schedule,” said Christman. “Nicole’s idea of starting a map here in Sarasota, which is loaded with snowbirds and tourists seemed like a real winner. So, we put a plan in motion and the rest is history.” Discovery Map® produces colorful, hand-drawn maps that are a favorite of travelers seeking local dining, attractions, businesses, cultural experiences and great destinations. Discovery Maps can be found on display at visitor centers, local stores, restaurants, hotels and attractions.
“There is just so much to do and see here between Siesta, Lido and Longboat Keys, the downtown area, including Marina Jack’s, I’ve seen how well my other Discovery Map has been received in Breckenridge, Colorado. I know we will have similar results here in Sarasota,” said Guidi, who recently purchased a home in Sarasota. “I’m so looking forward to getting this map off the ground and watching it take off.”

Fun Fact: Did you know the temperature can drop dramatically during a total solar eclipse? Sometimes by as much as 20 degrees! It's like the Sun hitting a giant dimmer switch.
Eclipse 101: What to Expect in Vermont! 🌒
✨Get ready for a celestial spectacle! On April 8th, 2024, Discovery Map® HQ will be bathed in darkness during a total solar eclipse✨
Here's a quick guide to understanding this awe-inspiring event:
What is a Solar Eclipse?
Imagine a cosmic game of hide-and-seek! During a solar eclipse, the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on our planet. When this shadow falls on Vermont, we'll experience a total eclipse, where the sun will be completely blocked out for a brief period.
Vermont's Prime Time:
The total eclipse will begin in Vermont at 3:26 and last for approximately 3 minutes. This is your chance to witness a truly breathtaking sight!
Safety First:
Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, is extremely dangerous and can cause permanent eye damage.
Here's how to watch safely:
☀️Never look at the sun with your naked eyes.
☀️Use specially certified solar eclipse glasses. These glasses filter out harmful sunlight, allowing you to view the eclipse safely. Look for glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.
☀️Consider a solar eclipse projection box. This creates a safe indirect image of the eclipse on a surface.
☀️Find a viewing party! Many organizations will be hosting eclipse-watching events with proper safety measures in place.
