Surfing like most sports is a very visual dependent sport. Some more advanced surfers can “feel” when they need their body to respond and operate on more instinct, however most beginners don’t yet have this instinct and need to rely more on vision and being mentally prepared. I like to call it being “in tune” with the wave you’re about to ride. Stay as visual connected as possible with the wave you are paddling for. Divide focus if necessary to proper positioning on the board and other surfers that are possibly within range but try to maintain a majority of your focus on the possible changes in the wave directly before takeoff. Visually identifying these changes in the wave right before takeoff and making the necessary adjustments are often times crucial for success

Fellow surfers and friends, last week we lost a true friend Scott Desiderio “Desi”. He was an amazing guy and it breaks my heart that he’s gone. For those of you who didn’t know him, he was a special kind of person. The kind of person that everyone loved and greatly respected. He was a shredder! He had style, power, massive amounts of experience and wisdom, but more than that he was an extremely kind and selfless human, committed to nonprofit causes and a dedicated volunteer.

I didn’t know him as well as I wish I did, but I know how special he was and what a great loss it is that he is gone. If you knew Desi or if you just know me and think I’m pretty cool, we are honoring his legacy of selflessness by supporting his family and allowing his wife Yumi to grieve without worry with a GoFundMe fundraiser. Please check it out and join us in honoring our dear friend Desi.

Your speed off the bottom will determine what kind of turn you can do at the top. Listen to Kelly, here are just few things I’ve learned from listening to the goat. #1 the timing and placement of your bottom turn is more important than anything else #2 the shape and steepness of the wave will be the biggest factor when approaching the lip and deciding what maneuver is right for that particular section #3 the best surfers are the best because they can look at a section and adjust quickly, last second adjustments are key.
