Did you know taking care of our starts in the mountain? 👇🏼 🌱
Native Hawaiian plants are constantly being suffocated by invasive plants that don’t allow them to filter water as they should. When unfiltered water hits the shorelines these reefs take it in. They don’t like dirty water either, so remember: MĀLAMA ‘ĀINA.

May the FOREST be with you 🤍.

Looking for waterfalls? 💧

Forget about waterfalls! This tour helps you understand why waterfalls exist in the first place.

In addition, adventure seekers can swing from vines on one of Maui's largest Banyan trees, as well as walk through a historic coffee farm, and marvel at some of our island's ancient native trees. Book the hike today!

What do we wear? Is a question we get asked often. For those venturing out to hike in Maui for the first time, you might be a little unsure of how to dress and what to bring.

The island has a rich biodiversity and weather patterns–hot and sunny beaches, wet rainforests, afternoon trade winds, a slightly cooler temperature up country. Depending on where you’re headed, make sure you plan ahead and know what to expect. For our Honolua Ridgeline Hike, we recommend you wear something practical and comfortable. Here’s a list that will prepare you for an adventurous day into the Maunalei Arboretum with us:

1. Comfortable footwear: We recommend close-toed shoes like athletic or running shoes. Just make sure they have some kind of traction and grip. You’ll be entering a watershed in Maui’s native forest, so you’ll want some kind of grip if you slip a little. However, the 500 foot climb is gradual, so even the most minimal of hikers will be fine. Even if you get a little muddy, you can always rinse them off with fresh water and leave them out to dry overnight (or in the afternoon sun).

2. Comfortable (and breathable) clothing: Much of our eco tour is under the shade of a canopy, though let’s face it–Hawaii gets hot. You won’t need more than a t-shirt or tank top, though whatever you go with, make sure it’s breathable or moisture-locking. It might also be a good idea to wear lightweight pants or leggings for protection from the sun or to avoid any cuts or scrapes from nearby branches.

3. Protection from the sun: Have we mentioned the Hawaii sun? The majority of our trail is shaded, but once we get to the top of Pu’u Kukui Preserve, you’ll be thankful for bringing a hat, whether a baseball cap, bucket hat, or one with a fancy neck-cord. Sunglasses aren’t a bad idea either, and bringing sunscreen is pretty much a no-brainer. Regardless, you’ll want to be sure to protect your face from the unforgiving sun.

4. Water: Yes, we know it’s technically not an item of clothing, but we can’t stress enough how important it is to stay hydrated. So whether you’re hiking with us or not, don’t leave home without it.

Hope that is helpful & hope to see you on the mauna! 🤙 ⛰️

Aloha 👋🏻 ‘Ohana is a major reason we are able to do what we love so much every day. Sometimes when we look up from the daily grind, we see a beautiful village surrounding us full of family, friends, co-workers, business partners, customers, keiki.. the list is endless, and we couldn’t do it without all of you. Mahalo from the bottom of our hearts, to those who make this Helewai wheel keep on turning.

Another successful Seeding the Future event at ❤️ A little wind and rain wouldn’t stop us from planting 3500 Naupaka and Maiapilo babies with our partners! All these starts will eventually be apart of reforestation efforts on the island of Lana’i. We love our job (and plants!) 🌱

If you look closely…. do you see an old plantation front loader hiding in that ficus tree? Swipe ➡️to see it up close!

This scene you’ll find on the Mahana Ridge Trail as we venture through the old pineapple fields. This machine tells us 2 things - one being that area used to be a work camp where the plantation employees lived and second, ficus trees do indeed propagate. DT Fleming planted the ficus originally thinking it wouldn’t become an invasive species because Maui didn’t have its pollinator. But here we see a new ficus that landed on the vehicle and started to grow. Amazing!

There are so many cool things to see and learn on our tours, so feel free to hit that BOOK NOW button. You won’t regret it!

Native plant series #1

The beloved ‘Ohi’a Lehua. This is a tree that truly embodies the spirit of “love conquers all”. The first Hawaiian plant that rises from the ashes…the tree that nurtures the rarest, endemic bird species. There are so many special things about ‘Ohi’a Lehua, it’s hard to list them all. We are love struck ❤️

P.S. these designs are available for sticker purchase coming to you soon…!

Aloha, my name is Kevin Schenk. I’m the owner/operator of Helewai Eco tours. At Helewai Eco tours, we connect people with a part of Maui that very few get to experience. We’ll take you into the native forest and show you this battle going on between native and invasive species of plants. You will learn what our conservation efforts are all about and what is being done to protect this place.

Our goal is for every guest to understand the relationship between our watershed, the things that exist in it and our impact on it. So maybe too they will discover their own path to malama ‘aina. Not only do you get an incredible experience hiking through some of the most beautiful forest that Maui has to offer, you get the ability to learn the stories and develop a deeper passion for a place that is already cherished by so many.

On behalf of all of us at Helewai Eco tours we appreciate your time and hope to see you all up on the mauna.

Aloha adventurers! Although we absolutely love the rain, this is a PSA to all you hikers today to please be safe and watch for signs of flash flooding. Keep out of pools and do not walk through rushing water. 6 inches of flowing water can sweep a person off their feet and carry them downstream. Even if it’s not raining exactly where you are, Hawaii weather is very localized so look up ⬆️ it could be raining just above you. Know your terrain and keep your eyes and ears open. Pay attention to your surroundings. And when in doubt, don’t go out. Stay safe out there!
