Palenque San Basilio de Palenque, also known as Palenque, is located in the Bolívar Department of Colombia and is known for its historical status as the first free African slave settlement in the Americas. Founded by escaped slaves in the 17th century, it became a refuge for those fleeing the bondage of Spanish colonialism. The community developed its own Creole language, Palenquero, and preserved many African traditions, which have been passed down through generations. In 2005, UNESCO declared Palenque a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity for its cultural significance.
