Once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi is an open-air museum of history, architecture, and spirituality, sprawling across the landscape with ruins that whisper tales of grandeur and devastation. The city’s intricate temples, such as the Virupaksha Temple, and public spaces, like the Royal Enclosure, transport visitors to the epicenter of one of the most powerful Hindu kingdoms in India’s history. The landscape, dotted with giant boulders and palm groves, adds a mystical quality to Hampi, enhancing the sense of stepping into a different era.

Active Travel Hurdles and How to Avoid Them

Here are a few of the most common travel hurdles you’ll encounter while planning an active vacation—and how to navigate around them.

Exploring the world on foot is one of the most rewarding vacation experiences you can have. Imagine yourself strolling through a medieval French village or pausing under the shade of a pine tree to catch your first view of crashing waves along the Atlantic coast of Portugal. At close of day, you’re tired but invigorated—ready for a hot shower, a relaxing dinner, and a comfortable night’s rest. Of course, there are many different styles and approaches to consider when organizing your walking tour—bearing in mind that even the best things in life come with their share of ups and downs. Here are a few of the most common travel hurdles you’ll encounter while planning an active vacation—and how to navigate around them.

The Staggering Amount of Time it Takes to Plan a DIY Vacation
If you’re trying to decide if you should plan your own walking vacation from soup to nuts, the first question to ask yourself is—”how much time do I want to spend planning this?” If your answer is “I want to devote months of my life to planning every detail” then a do-it-yourself (DIY) walking tour is for you! If, on the other hand, your schedule is packed with work and play, booking with Caton Travel takes much less time. Just find the departure you want, book it—then let us take care of the nitty-gritty. Here are a few examples of things you DON’T have to plan:

Booking flights: Our expert flight department will find the best airlines and itineraries for you at reasonable prices—taking advantage of our contract rates with major carriers.

Finding hotels: Our associates visit each hotel to ensure it ranks highly on our 23-point hotel scoring matrix.

Moving your luggage: On one of our adventures, our tour guides move your luggage to each hotel for you.

Mapping the best walking routes: Our guides walk all the routes themselves and our local in-country staff members are always on the lookout for trail closures and other detours. Our detailed route notes provide you with maps, step-by-step instructions, and sight-seeing recommendations.

Managing the unexpected: Let’s face it—even the most well-planned vacation can hit the odd wrinkle. With our 24/7 local support team is there to iron it out for you—so you can relax and enjoy your vacation with total peace of mind.

Missing Out on the Hidden Gems
There’s no denying it—conducting travel research is a poor substitute for authentic local knowledge. However, if you’re planning a walking trip to a far-off destination, what resources do you have beyond guidebooks and the internet? The trouble is—those are the resources everyone else has, too.

In our experience, the best walking trails aren’t always in the guidebooks—and even if you did happen to stumble across one of the region’s hidden gems, how would you know? Most of us tend to choose the trail that has the best reviews—which is exactly why you’ll wind up walking with a pack of tourists who all had the same idea.

If your goal is to veer off the beaten path and explore the authentic heart of your destination, you’ll need the inside perspective. We have partners all over the world from our experienced local partners in Europe, South America, and the United States to our friends and family in Africa, Asia, and New Zealand. This gives us the inside scoop on trails with unique features, top conditions, and opportunities to spot local wildlife. We keep our ear to the ground, so we know about local changes as they happen. We’re experts when it comes to finding seamless alternatives if flooding washes out a bridge, or a trail is temporarily rerouted due to local conservation efforts. When you plan a DIY tour, you’re at the mercy of published information—so it’s easy to get surprised by last-minute developments.

Call us to plan your next adventure!

The best places to run and hike in the Caribbean?

When many travelers plan of a Caribbean vacation, they’re dreaming of activities such as relaxing at the pool or catching some rays on the beach. But for running and hiking enthusiasts, an island getaway can be filled with exciting action as well as gorgeous scenery.

Here are some of the best running and hiking locations and events around the Caribbean.

Where to Hike in the Caribbean
Destinations large and small offer an array of possibilities for exploring by foot. Dominica, for example, is far from the Caribbean’s biggest island, but it’s home to what is reportedly the longest hiking trail in the destination: Waitukubuli Trail, which runs some 120 miles and is divided into 14 segments, some of which pass through villages and rainforests, with photo-worthy views of waterfalls, rivers and mountains along the way. Some trails require site passes, and tourism office Discover Dominica Authority offers a “hike passport” that allows visitors to record their hiking experiences.

The U.S. Virgin Islands also offers multiple opportunities for hiking, including Magens Bay Discovery Trail, a 2.4-mile route in St. Thomas; the Jack and Isaac Bay Preserve Trail, a 3.6-mile hiking path in St. Croix; and the Bordeaux Mountain Trail, a challenging 1.2-mile trek that traverses the island’s highest peak as well as the ruins of an 18th-century rum distillery.

In Tobago, runners and hikers can come face to face with a variety of flora and fauna at Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its diverse flora and fauna, including 16 lizard species and 210 bird species.

In St. Kitts, one of the most scenic hikes is up Mount Liamuiga, the island’s tallest peak. The roundtrip hike from Newton Ground takes between six and seven hours and crosses through pristine tropical jungle, with lots of opportunities to spot hummingbirds and vervet monkeys before reaching the 3,792-foot peak at the volcano’s rim. The island’s Bat Cave is another popular destination with hikers; it follows Bloody River and leads to a cave that’s home to hundreds of bats.

Experienced and novice hikers alike can find an excursion to meet their abilities in Bonaire, where Washington Slagbaai National Park has three established hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty, with opportunities to hike to the top of a volcanic hill and past pink flamingos.

Several hotels in the Caribbean make it even easier for visitors to explore the islands on foot. In Guadeloupe, for example, Club Med Caravelle offers a guided one-day hiking excursion to the active Soufriere Volcano. And in the Dominican Republic, The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club features 7 miles of trails that are ideal for walking, running and cycling. The hotel’s running concierge service can even provide equipment and a map of the property’s trail.

In St. Lucia, Calabash Cove Resort & Spa arranges private climbs of Mount Gimie, the island’s highest peak, which soars more than 3,100 feet. Also in St. Lucia is Jade Mountain, which has a “hiking butler” program that provides a personal butler for trips up the Gros Piton volcanic mountains.

Running Events in the Caribbean
Runners will find lots of reasons to visit the Caribbean, too, thanks to the number of competitions that take place — generally in the winter, spring and fall, when temperatures are more comfortable.

In the Bahamas, Marathon Bahamas is celebrating its annual event in 2024, following a multiyear, pandemic-era hiatus. Scheduled for Jan. 14 this year, it will take place again in January 2025. The event includes a 26.2-mile marathon, a half-marathon and The Pink Run 5K (formerly known as Komen Bahamas), which raises money for breast cancer research and aims to increase awareness about the disease.

In Nevis, Nevis Marathon and Running Festival is on the calendar for Sept. 7, 2024, with a full marathon, a 13.1-mile half-marathon and 10K and 5K competitions. Also on the island is Nevis Triathlon, which is scheduled for November 2024 with a half-mile swim, 20-mile cycle route and 5K run. The event also includes a “Try a Tri” option for newcomers that includes a 0.06-mile swim, 5K bike ride and 2K run.

The highest-profile running event in Jamaica is Reggae Marathon, which will take place Dec. 8, 2024, in Negril, with a half-marathon and 10K races. Several tour operators (listed on the official site) offer packages timed with the event. Also in December is Barbados Marathon Weekend Series, which celebrated 40 years in 2023 with live entertainment, full and half-marathons and 5K and 10K races.

Runners and walkers alike are welcome at Sea to Scenery Run in Saba in early December. The event includes a run to what’s billed as “the highest point in the Dutch Kingdom,” Mount Scenery, and it’s open to walking enthusiasts, as well.

Travelers looking to combine running with cruising, meanwhile, may be interested in the Run for Fun Cruise Caribbean Adventure, slated for Feb. 24 to March 3, 2024. The cruise departs from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and makes stops for island run/walk events at ports of call including Tortola, Saint Lucia, Barbados, St. Maarten and St. Thomas.

REACH TOWARD THE EDGE OF THE ARCTIC

Experience cruising with an expedition team!

Navigation around Surtsey Island is a rare treat for explorers as it’s only open to researchers. As your Captain sails around the island, you may spot flocks of puffins along the shoreline or seals and orcas in nearby waters. In Heimaey, built around the remains of an excavated home buried by ash during Eldfell’s eruption, you’ll find the Eldheimar Museum with a tour that takes you through the home and describes the history of the eruption. The small town of Grundarfjörður, home to fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, is also home to Kirkjufell (Church Mountain). Together with the mountain, a three-pronged waterfall called Kirkjufellsfoss creates an exquisite scene straight out of fantasy. Venture into the northernmost inhabited island in Iceland when you land in Grímsey. Look for the stone sphere marking the edge of the Arctic Circle.

The high northern location of these mountains will assure a good quantity of snow and the view of the neighboring mountains and down to the deep blue fjord is both magnificent and surreal. In the late afternoon, local swimming pools, that sometimes look more like a spa (heated with the geothermal hot water), are a welcoming place to relax after a day of skiing from a mountain summit to the ocean.
