Do you know where this popular holiday drink originated?
Eggnog is believed to have originated in medieval Britain, where it evolved from a hot, milky ale-like drink known as "posset." Posset was made from hot milk curdled with ale or wine and was often mixed with spices like nutmeg and cinnamon.
It took on a new identity when eggnog crossed to colonial America. Milk, eggs, and spices were more accessible, and rum became the alcohol of choice. This helped eggnog become especially popular in American holiday traditions. Over time, it became a festive drink associated with Christmas, symbolizing warmth, cheer, and celebration.
So, while the British laid the foundation, it was in America that eggnog truly became a holiday favorite!
