Heading to the Masai Mara? Judy here...I just have to share that one of my favorite accommodations is Governors’ Il Moran Camp. I have such wonderful memories of the times since I’ve been living state-side, that I got the privilege of traveling back to Kenya. On this trip in particular, the only family member who was able to travel at that time, was my great Aunt Mary. When she heard that we were staying in tents, she was quite hesitant, to say the least. Having known and worked with the family who owns Governors Camp for more than 3 decades, gave me the credibility in her eyes that she could let go of any pre-conceived notions, and boy, did she! One soak in the inviting clawfoot bathtub in our private en-suite bathroom was all she needed. I’ll never forget her face when we headed out for a game drive and within 5 minutes we were amongst a family of 20 lion, or the way she looked at the sky in wonder as a hot air balloon set sail.

The first permanent tented camp to be built in the Masai Mara, gave choice to be one of the best locations along the Mara river. In fact, the location was considered so good during colonial times, that it was reserved for the colonial governors of Kenya; hence its namesake, Governors Camp. "Hidden under ancient trees, deep in the forest are just 10 tents for those who want that extra bit of luxury."

Which African country was the birthplace of safari? Well, if you answered Kenya- you are correct! One of the most amazing destinations for an authentic safari (and we must mention the fact that you can still go on a night time game drive here)...is Loisaba Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau.

There really is no other experience quite like this. Loisaba Conservancy is a private ranch, with a total area of just under 100 square miles, it is a paradise for more than 260 species of birds and 50 species of game, including lions, wild dogs, reticulated giraffe and the endangered Grevy’s zebra, who are protected here in this private conservancy. High on Laikipia Plateau, it is bordered by the west bank of the Ewaso Ngiro River, a landscape of acacia scrub, patches of woodland and a riverine forest. In northern Laikipia, this private ranch is in a movement corridor for the second-largest population of Kenya’s African elephants. Operated by a combined effort of the private owners in partnership with the Masai and Samburu people, you will not find a fence here, and only a limited number of guests visiting at any given time, which keeps the private conservancy exactly that: Private, safe, secluded, the goal being that guests not see another vehicle on game drives giving the essence of being out in the African bush before modern times, when it was you and the flora and fauna.

How does exploring on horseback where you ride past herds of elephant and walk along close to giraffe sound? Perhaps something a little more traditional sounds inviting and you choose to explore on camel-back. Let yourself go high-speed on a mountain bike, or on a raft through this vast wilderness or slow down a bit with a bush walk and stop to visit the local villages for a bit of culture. A place you will undoubtedly see what makes the Loisaba Conservancy so sublime.

VIDEO: "Injured Albino Elephant Calf is brought into our care at HERD." A little background on HERD: Nestled within South Africa’s Kruger National Park, lives a very unique herd of elephants. Some belonging from birth, yet not all. This peculiar herd’s story begins in 1997 at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC), home to a cheetah breeding project. One day, founder Lente Roode got a call to rescue Jabulani, a 4-month old calf who was injured. Once restored back to health he was released to live with a wild herd within the preserve, however, the wild herd did not accept him, and Jabulani would return back to HESC, where he felt safe and comfortable. In 2002, Lente was asked to rescue a herd of elephants who were being used for elephant safaris. This would be no easy task as once the herd arrived, there was the very important introduction of Jabulani. As luck would have it, “Tokwe” the herd’s matriarch lovingly accepted Jabulani. It is believed that the members of this herd were all orphans too. And so, this began the journey and purpose of “Camp Jabulani.” As one can imagine, the cost of taking care of a herd of elephants along with their Carers quickly became quite overwhelming, and so it was decided that they would build a luxury lodge to help fund this endeavor. This was back in 2005, and since then Camp Jabulani has evolved and grown in many ways. Over the years the herd has been introduced to and lovingly accepted several other orphaned elephants and have birthed 5 healthy calves of their own. The elephant experience at Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development, (HERD) has been deemed acceptable by the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association. Camp Jabulani is an amazing experience! Families and individuals alike, enjoy a very interactive experience with the elephants. In “The First Meeting,” expect a personal orientation with the Jabulani “Mascots.” Directly at the Lodge, you will meet and hear from the Carers, and normally will get an opportunity to get closer to one or two of the elephants, “ambassadors,” who enjoy being around guests. Meet up at one of the herds’ favorite watering holes and watch them splash and play together; an excellent photo opp for all of you photographers!

Join a ranger, senior trails guide and senior elephant keeper and track the Jabulani elephants within the Big Five Kapama Private Game Reserve from the comfort of a safari vehicle. Spend the afternoon watching them and hearing more about their individual stories, getting to know their personalities. Join the herd at the dam for their last drink at sunset and follow them back to the stables and watch in fascination as the babies are tucked in for the night. All of this AND an incredible stay at the luxury camp.
