Monterey County Vacation Rental Alliance

The Monterey County Vacation Rental Alliance (MCVRA) is a coalition of homeowners and proper

ty managers in Monterey County. We work to protect and support vacation rentals by working with elected officials, government staff, and the media. We monitor local legislation that could impact vacation rentals. Proposed laws and regulations are reviewed and a position is presented to government officials. If a proposed regulation is detrimental to vacation rentals, we mobilize our members to action in order to modify the regulation to get a win-win-win result – a win for the local economy, a win for neighborhoods, and a win for owners. We interface with the media to communicate the benefits and the issues resulting from proposed laws. Members of the Alliance believe strongly in responsible management to insure vacation homes fit seamlessly into neighborhoods. For our brochure, click here > www.mcvra.org/MCVRA%20Brochure.pdf

How many of you have stayed in Vacation Rental homes when traveling? For millions of travelers a short term rental is the preferred way option for accommodations. The option of renting a private home where multi-generations, golf foursomes, girl’s weekends, etc. can gather for meals, games and fun has made traveling a much richer experience.

The county supervisors are voting on December 7th to effectively ban ALL but about 30 permitted STR’s from operating. This would be an economic disaster for the county.

The Monterey County Vacation Rental Alliance has been working diligently for more than 7 years with the county to create and pass a thoughtful, economically valuable ordinance to allow the operation of these rentals. We want safe, well-regulated options available for travelers and the community.

The supervisors are planning a plan to beef up (ie, spend tax dollars) on code enforcement of ALL operators whether or not there has been a complaint. (There have been less than 30 actual nuisance ordinances in the last 7 years) This proposed ban is being voted on December 7th and we need your help to let those supervisors know how much you value short term rentals and the sharing economy as a traveler.

This short-sighted attempt needs to be stopped and a serious, well thought out ordinance needs to be passed. If you would take a minute and write a letter in support of the sharing economy including STR’s it would be greatly appreciated by all who travel to our beautiful county.

With more than 4.5 million visitors annually there are not enough hotel rooms available to maintain a vibrant, economic windfall for the county without the operation of Short Term Rentals. If the supervisors vote to ban them, local workers will lose their income, businesses will have less tourist traffic and families will have to sell their homes (most likely to a developer) - none of that is good for this community.

We've made it very easy for you to send an online letter in opposition to this ban. It will take only 2 minutes of your time and could make a big difference. Please go to the following URL and follow the directions.

We’ve made it very easy - you can write your own letter, or use the text provided at this link:

The Monterey County Supervisors will soon vote on a proposal to ban almost all short-term vacation rentals (STRs) in Monterey County that do not have a use permit. That permit is virtually impossible to obtain, so 99+% of all STRs in Monterey county have been operating without one. Vacation rental o...
