Well it looks like the UK's ETA is a big hit within the Parliament so they're raising the cost! Fortunately they are deleting the requirement for passengers just transiting through the country.

Just released:
Next steps for a more efficient immigration system

New measures have been announced today to reduce the reliance of the migration and borders system on taxpayer funding.

Published 16 January 2025

The proposed changes laid before Parliament today (16 January) will provide the flexibility to increase the maximum fee that can be charged on a range of immigration and nationality products and services, including:

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) fee rising to £16

The changes to ETAs, certificates of sponsorship and nationality products are forecast to generate an additional £269 million a year.

As part of the government’s Plan for Change, ETAs will deliver a more streamlined, digital immigration system which will be quicker and more secure for the millions of people who pass through the UK border each year.

The introduction of ETAs is in line with the approach to border security taken by many other countries, including the USA and Australia.

However, following feedback from the aviation industry, the government has agreed a temporary exemption for passengers who transit airside, and therefore do not pass through UK border control.

This move will primarily affect Heathrow and Manchester airports, as the only UK airports which currently offer transit facilities. The exemption will be kept under review.

The legislation laid today will be debated in Parliament and is subject to approval by both Houses. If approved, the proposed new fees will be introduced by amending separate legislation, the Immigration and Nationality (Fees) Regulations 2018, as soon as Parliamentary time allows.

Some great information from one of my top suppliers in Paris...

I wanted to pass along the current information we have about visiting Notre Dame. The bottom line is right now we cannot guarantee clients access to the cathedral because of the new booking system in place.

The current process is the following:

Limited Numbers: Right now approximately 1,200 people per day are allowed to visit the cathedral. Eventually, tourism officials expect 40,000 people per day. One of the reasons for the drastic cut in visitors is the entire renovation of Notre Dame is not fully complete.

Individual Reservations Only: Right now, only individuals can book reservations to visit. The new schedule for the entire week opens every Monday at 8:00am (Paris time). For example, if you go online on a Wednesday, you are only able to book reservations for Wednesday through Sunday. Reservations for the following week do not open until the Monday morning.

Group Tours: At this time, guides are not allowed to bring groups in. In March, guides can begin booking reservations for tours in June…nothing sooner.

One last point, entry into Notre Dame is free as it is a church (versus a monument or museum).

The situation is fluid and I will keep you posted as we learn more!

The Story of 2 Sisters

I grew up in Texas, Georgia and North Carolina and was involved in the travel business at an early age as my father, Harold Panel, worked for Eastern Airlines and my mother, Vickie, worked at various travel agencies as we moved across the Southeast. We traveled often during my childhood and teen years. My best memories are from our family camping trips and cruising the Mediterranean Sea. I followed in my father's footsteps and went to work at the airlines (Eastern and Delta) for a few years. By then, my parents had opened their own travel agency and I joined them as a cruise specialist, then eventually moved into all aspect of booking travel and managed their Cameron Village office once they expanded their business. After a few years, I met the man of my dreams, got married and he whisked me away to Hendersonville, NC where I went to work for Wilcox Travel and Tours focusing mainly on corporate travel and handling several large national accounts. We enjoyed a couple of years in the mountains before moving to Burlinton, NC and I retired from the travel business to stay at home with our newborn son.

Two decades later, after my two sons have grown up and flown from the nest, and various jobs in the promotions and marketing industry, retail, the art world, etc., and a move to Alabama, my sister, Angie, approached me with the idea of returning to the travel agency, working with my father, and upon her retirement from 30 years of teaching, she would join the business as well. Thus, the creation of 2 Sisters Travel, our affiliation with Travel Source and Travel Experts, and the return to my roots in travel. I'm very excited about taking the knowledge and experiences I have gained and using it to find exciting ways to give our clients the best possible travel experiences.

I am also a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor at Special Equestrians and enjoy painting and tennis when not at the barn playing with my horse, Kaspar. I am also a big fan of UAB basketball, football and tennis, as well as Birmingham-Southern Lacrosse!
