Malawi is a country of stunning landscapes, expansive golden beaches, the continent's second largest lake filled with over 800 cichlid species, friendly local communities, and conservation successes that have returned national parks to thriving wildlife havens. And it's now visa Free! The government recently announced ending of tourist visas for 79 countries including the USA. With plentiful flight connections from neighboring countries including South Africa and Zambia, it's never been easier to access this unconventional and underestimated beach and safari holiday destination.

Happy Lunar New Year! According to the 3,000 year old Chinese Zodiac, the year of the wood dragon begins with the new moon, commencing a year influenced by the power of the dragon and nurturing essence of wood which encourages everyone to explore, stay open minded, and follow our curiosity. What a lovely theme for 2024. Photo courtesy of Sydney Opera House, which is lit red, the auspicious color of energy and prosperity, in celebration of the new year.

Did you know today is international pisco sour day? In honor of Chile and Peru's dueling national drink (who are we to question the holiday), we're sharing a recipe for Chilean pisco. Add some egg whites if you're feeling Peruvian or take on a signature personalization with some Johnny Walker Black, like our host did at our camp in Torres del Paine National Park. Pisco is for everybody and is best enjoyed while savoring spectacular scenery or after adventures in the outdoors! How do you like to make yours?

This evening marks the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The longest night of the year has long been a time to celebrate the imminent return of the sun for cultures across the world. The ancient Neolithic monument of Stonehenge, which we love to visit with a local expert guide, was constructed to align with the sun's path where archaeologists find evidence of feasts and gatherings for the solstice. Today, we see traditions remaining from the Japanese custom of soaking in a hot bath with citrus fruit, the Chinese belief in the transition from yin energy to yang energy, and the Iranian celebration of rebirth, called Yalda. Many say this is the time of year to plant seeds of intention in preparation for the germination of springtime. So, we wish you a peaceful winter solstice and take comfort in the hope of light to come.

While no safari is complete without the charismatic big cats, the awe-inspiring elephant herds, and the colorful birdlife, safari is punctuated by little moments with creatures you may not know will be so endearing. This southern tree hyrax (dendrohyrax arboretus) is a close relative to none other than the elephant! A nocturnal creature, it still loves to bathe in the warmth of morning sunlight as it watches for predators before bedding down in the safety of a tree cavity.

As we enter the holiday season, we should all be equipped with a drink recipe that can be both medicinal and indulgent. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger, vitamin C from fresh lemon or lime juice, antibacterial benefits of raw honey, and hydrating water are the essential ingredients to Dawa tea, which means "medicine" in Swahili. A clever, enterprising cocktail enthusiast at Nairobi's Carnivore Restaurant blended inspiration from traditional tea with the crisp and refreshing caipirinha to make Kenya's National cocktail, the Dawa.

Rwanda's Nyungwe National Park is officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! We had the pleasure of exploring Nyungwe earlier this year with outstanding chimpanzee observations. It's one of the oldest rainforests in Africa with more endemic species than any forest in the Albertine Rift, housing 322 bird species, over a dozen primate species, endemic butterflies, and over 200 orchids!

As a boutique travel company, we're lucky to work with travelers who seek out meaningful connection, embrace diversity, and invest in travel that makes a positive impact. So, on we celebrate our intrepid adventurers who support the mission of Great Expeditions Travel to make travel life-changing. This year's theme is Tourism and Green Investment, so here are a few examples of adventures that included tourism-supported conservation efforts:
1. Darcie Smith, co-owner of Great Expeditions Travel administering oxygen to a white rhino during its GPS collaring at Marataba Conservation Camps
2. Coral reef protection in Dominica against operated by local professionals in collaboration with visiting divers to help catalogue, treat, and monitor coral in the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve
3. Our Zambia group spent a morning with the Musekese Conservation team who were preparing for the , one of the many ways they have been instrumental in fundraising for conservation of Kafue National Park. Their research, monitoring, and community outreach has made an enormous impact on the health and increase in wildlife.
4. Chilean gaucho culture has historically been at odds with pumas, but the oldest working estancia in Torres del Paine is at the forefront of tourism-supported conservation. Their approach is using tourism to help balance cultural preservation with adapting to best practices for sustainable livestock management and wildlife conservation.
5. In Fiji, community-led tourism is abundant, whether you're on multi-day treks overnighting in rural communities like some of our group will be doing before our dive trip, experiencing the rich traditions of a local community on a day visit, joining a local guide on an epic waterfall exploration, or even purchasing a souvenir pearl from a community-coop that is also protecting a mangrove ecosystem.

Cozumel is a favorite for drift-loving divers. Its fun swim-throughs, less-visited Mayan ruins, and barefoot reggae offer a slower pace than the mainland. The island of Cozumel sits across from Playa del Carmen, not far from the Yucatan mainland but a world away from the hustle and bustle. Cozumel boasts white sand beaches, coral reefs, and large swaths of indigenous forest that house the ancient Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, a sacred place of pilgrimage for women seeking fertility. Cozumel sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and is world famous for its drift diving with fabulous walls and coral reef teeming with marine life. Snorkeling from shore is a worthwhile way to pass the afternoon with a variety of reef fish to be discovered and safe conditions. The wild and rugged eastern side of the island remains predominantly uninhabited with interspersed beaches and barefoot cantinas while the southern tip is designated as the Punta Sur Ecological Park, offering beautiful beaches and mangroves filled with birdlife. A short ferry across from Playa del Carmen, you still have access to the famous whale sharks and otherworldly labyrinth of cenotes

08/03/2023

According to the UN, tourism is of “increased importance” for its ability to provide women with opportunities for empowerment, and we strive to support gender equality by working with local businesses that invest in women, especially in destinations where cultural constraints limit their options. Through female entrepreneurship, employment of female leaders, systems to support a safe working environment, and increasing training opportunities, the travel industry is a powerful tool for change.

So, in honor of International Women's Day, we'd like to give a shout out to some of those talented females we’ve met along the way: the guides, chefs, hospitality magicians, scientists, and authors that bring their expertise and passion into our travel experiences. Whether we’re exploring remote landscapes of Patagonia, savoring Venetian chicheettis, scuba diving with environmental stewards, seeking out wildlife in the far reaches of Australia and Africa, or learning the secrets of Indian spices from an authored naturalist, we are investing in meaningful connection where empowerment begets empowerment.

The male gelada is marked with a “bleeding heart” on his chest, indicating sexual maturity where other baboons are flagged on their rumps. These grass grazers sit too much for their bums to be a social signal, hence the evolution of the chest patch. Geladas live in the highlands of Ethiopia’s Simian Mountains where visitors can casually walk through them as they go about their business.

October 24 marks the first day of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. This is one of the most important Hindu holidays where preparations include decorating with oil lamps, or diyas, and circular patterns of color, called rangolis, which help to symbolize the defeat of good over evil and light over darkness. The third day of Diwali coincides with the last day of the waning crescent moon, culminating in the height of celebration. Happy Diwali!

The rebound is real! From mother-daughter gondola rides through Venice to anniversary celebrations on the Amalfi Coast, and gal pal culinary adventures, we have seen quite the uptick in demand for Italy this year. With the Euro at a 20-year low, we received a lot of last-minute requests for a destination that was certainly feeling the travel pressure. Are you considering a holiday to Italy? If so, we strongly recommend planning in advance to ensure you have choice no matter the season.

Good news! Zambia has ended the tourist visa for passengers coming from the US, Canada, Australia, EU, and the UK! Zambia is the birthplace of walking safaris, offering an unscripted safari experience with top quality guiding. The country has so much to offer from iconic and immersive safaris to the mighty Victoria Falls, and the friendliest local people. There are still a few spots left on our confirmed Zambia departure next June led by Darcie Smith, which showcases three of Zambia's treasured parks, the Kafue, Lower Zambezi, and South Luangwa. https://greatexpeditionstravel.com/zambia-immersive-safari
