Malawi is a country of stunning landscapes, expansive golden beaches, the continent's second largest lake filled with over 800 cichlid species, friendly local communities, and conservation successes that have returned national parks to thriving wildlife havens. And it's now visa Free! The government recently announced ending of tourist visas for 79 countries including the USA. Happy Lunar New Year! According to the 3,000 year old Chinese Zodiac, the year of the wood dragon begins with the new moon, commencing a year influenced by the power of the dragon and nurturing essence of wood which encourages everyone to explore, stay open minded, and follow our curiosity. What a lovely theme for 2024. Photo courtesy of Sydney Opera House, which is lit red, the auspicious color of energy and prosperity, in celebration of the new year.

Did you know today is international pisco sour day? In honor of Chile and Peru's dueling national drink (who are we to question the holiday), we're sharing a recipe for Chilean pisco. Add some egg whites if you're feeling Peruvian or take on a signature personalization with some Johnny Walker Black, like our host did at our camp in Torres del Paine National Park. Pisco is for everybody and is best enjoyed while savoring spectacular scenery or after adventures in the outdoors! How do you like to make yours?

This evening marks the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The longest night of the year has long been a time to celebrate the imminent return of the sun for cultures across the world. The ancient Neolithic monument of Stonehenge, which we love to visit with a local expert guide, was constructed to align with the sun's path where archaeologists find evidence of feasts and gatherings for the solstice. Today, we see traditions remaining from the Japanese custom of soaking in a hot bath with citrus fruit, the Chinese belief in the transition from yin energy to yang energy, and the Iranian celebration of rebirth, called Yalda. Many say this is the time of year to plant seeds of intention in preparation for the germination of springtime. So, we wish you a peaceful winter solstice and take comfort in the hope of light to come.

While no safari is complete without the charismatic big cats, the awe-inspiring elephant herds, and the colorful birdlife, safari is punctuated by little moments with creatures you may not know will be so endearing. This southern tree hyrax (dendrohyrax arboretus) is a close relative to none other than the elephant! A nocturnal creature, it still loves to bathe in the warmth of morning sunlight as it watches for predators before bedding down in the safety of a tree cavity.

As we enter the holiday season, we should all be equipped with a drink recipe that can be both medicinal and indulgent. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger, vitamin C from fresh lemon or lime juice, antibacterial benefits of raw honey, and hydrating water are the essential ingredients to Dawa tea, which means "medicine" in Swahili. A clever, enterprising cocktail enthusiast at Nairobi's Carnivore Restaurant blended inspiration from traditional tea with the crisp and refreshing caipirinha to make Kenya's National cocktail, the Dawa.

Rwanda's Nyungwe National Park is officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! We had the pleasure of exploring Nyungwe earlier this year with outstanding chimpanzee observations. It's one of the oldest rainforests in Africa with more endemic species than any forest in the Albertine Rift, housing 322 bird species, over a dozen primate species, endemic butterflies, and over 200 orchids!

As a boutique travel company, we're lucky to work with travelers who seek out meaningful connection, embrace diversity, and invest in travel that makes a positive impact. So, on we celebrate our intrepid adventurers who support the mission of Great Expeditions Travel to make travel life-changing. This year's theme is Tourism and Green Investment, so here are a few examples of adventures that included tourism-supported conservation efforts:
1. Darcie Smith, co-owner of Great Expeditions Travel administering oxygen to a white rhino during its GPS collaring at Marataba Conservation Camps
2. Coral reef protection in Dominica against operated by local professionals in collaboration with visiting divers to help catalogue, treat, and monitor coral in the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve
3. Our Zambia group spent a morning with the Musekese Conservation team who were preparing for the , one of the many ways they have been instrumental in fundraising for conservation of Kafue National Park. Their research, monitoring, and community outreach has made an enormous impact on the health and increase in wildlife.
4. Chilean gaucho culture has historically been at odds with pumas, but the oldest working estancia in Torres del Paine is at the forefront of tourism-supported conservation. Their approach is using tourism to help balance cultural preservation with adapting to best practices for sustainable livestock management and wildlife conservation.
5. In Fiji, community-led tourism is abundant, whether you're on multi-day treks overnighting in rural communities like some of our group will be doing before our dive trip, experiencing the rich traditions of a local community on a day visit, joining a local guide on an epic waterfall exploration, or even purchasing a souvenir pearl from a community-coop that is also protecting a mangrove ecosystem.

Oh Iceland...the land of quirky museums, friendly locals, tempestuous nature, and breathtaking landscapes including the currently-erupting Litli-Hrutur. It's character is in its contrasts: emerald auroras and endless daylight, expansive silence and crashing waves, geothermal relaxation and epic excitement. We know how to to get off the influencer-beaten path and explore iconic landmarks without the crowds. Check out our website for some inspiration.
