Halloween's origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

Samhain
The Celts believed that the veil between the living and the dead was thinnest on Samhain, and that the souls of the dead would return to their homes. To ward off evil spirits, people would light bonfires, wear costumes, and sometimes sacrifice animals.
