The train to the end of the world (el Tren del Fin del Mundo) follows the old prison railway into the Tierra del Fuego National Park. It was like hiking, only without the mud and you’re sitting drinking wine while enjoying the scenery. 🍷⛰️🚂

One of the best parts of travel is meeting new friends and getting a feel for the local way of life. Our tour guide in Madeira took us to his hometown poncha bar to sample the traditional drink of Madeira. Unlike the wine the islands are famous for, poncha is a potent mix of fruit juices, honey, and rum. The folks at the bar could not have been more welcoming and happy to have us join them! Saúde! 🇵🇹

The stunning Hotel de la Marine was the palace where visiting dignitaries were housed when the came to Paris on official business. Overlooking the Place de la Concorde, this grand home is well worth a visit next time you are in Paris.

“Have fun storming the castle.” The entrances to the fortified Old Town of Rhodes are like entering a castle. This narrow door is one of the main entrances for cars and pedestrians alike. The “road” crosses a moat and winds its way through and outer curtain wall before joining the modern town.

Today, the mouth of Rhodes Harbor is flanked by two deer-capped columns. But 2200 years ago, the Colossus of Rhodes stood guard here. The giant brass statue of the sun god Helios stood as tall as the Statue of Liberty and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Unfortunately, it only stood for about 55 years - collapsing during an earthquake. Today, there’s a debate whether the statue straddled the harbor (one foot at the location of each pillar above) or whether it stood on just one side. Either way, it would have been impressive!
