“Mountain magic never fails…” and “…what are the chances?!”

This morning I noticed a FedEx driver stuck in our neighbor’s driveway. He couldn’t get up the iced-over drive’s slight hill to get back on our road. After several minutes of spinning his wheels, he was more stuck than ever. I texted my neighbor who apparently didn’t get the text (gotta love Frontier internet service here in our little corner of the mountains, but I’ll leave that for another time). I told my husband to go out and see if he could help. Being an old guy, he could at least sit behind the wheel as the delivery driver tried to push the car. Well, it turns out that the neighbor had indeed come out earlier to help but "Sergio" spoke no English and the neighbor spoke no Spanish. Unable to communicate, the driver was left trying to get out of his predicament on his own. Well, here’s the “what are the chances??” part of the story...

Sergio’s guardian angel had just sent him some “mountain magic”. Being a Cuban immigrant, my husband’s first language is Spanish. Sergio is a recent immigrant from Venezuela. He was dumbfounded to learn that his would-be rescuer – right here on a rural dead-end road in the remote western North Carolina mountains – not only spoke Spanish but was a fellow immigrant as well (albeit with vastly different arrival stories). Anyway, after a lot of shoving and pushing and some rope and a 4-wheel drive vehicle, Segio’s little car was back on the road and the next neighbor on his route would soon see their package delivered. Neighbor helping neighbor—that’s how we do it here in our little corner of the mountains. And I’m sure Sergio has a great story to share with his fellow immigrant roommates about how truly great this country is.

So excited to see some new life breathed into this old building! Thank you CCCRA for all you do for our little community!

Clay County Communities Revitalization Association, a nonprofit, better known as CCCRA was created in 1998, with the purpose to stimulate economic growth, promote the assets, and preserve the heritage of Clay County NC. Through our support of the Jack Rabbit Trail expansion, the Cherokee Exhibit, Quanassee Path and the restoration of the Historic Courthouse, CCCRA has done much to bring both tourism and businesses to Clay County. With support of these projects more visitors have come to Clay County and businesses have moved to the town square in Hayesville.

While these projects keep the volunteers of CCCRA quite busy, the organization has always been on the lookout for more avenues to meet our mission goals for the county. Therefore, when a new opportunity presented itself, CCCRA moved to take action in this regard. We are excited to announce that we have purchased the building at the corner of Herbert St. and Business 64 also known as the old McGlamery Hotel and Cafe across the street from Nocturnal. The building will be undergoing a complete restoration and will be repurposed as retail space. CCCRA is honored to have the opportunity to bring another building with a rich history in Hayesville back to life. We hope to get construction underway in early 2025. This project was made possible by a restricted donation from Clay County native Ron Beal.

We had a great and relaxing time at the cabin. The cabin had everything we needed and couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. We hardly left the property, it was that good.

If you were a bird, this is how you'd find our little corner of the mountains. And once on the ground, you'd see this lovely rpivate pond before heading down the lane to your cabin in the woods.

The impacts of this storm will have long-lasting and devastating impacts on so many areas, including local tourism. So many small towns depend on mountain tourism, leaf-peepers, hikers etc to help fuel their local economies.

We were spared the worst of the storm. Other areas not so fortunate. Caly County is pulling on its boots and collecting supplies, money and manpower to help our mountain neighbors to the east.

This just came across my email. Just notice that in our part of NC we are not being impacted as other areas in the state. Yesterday I was interviewed by WSBTV (Atlanta) and they were expecting to cover severe flooding and storm damage. The reality is that our road conditions are fine. Please share.
