📷🦐 Striped Snapping Shrimp Spotlight! 🦐📷
🌊 Dive into the fascinating world of the Striped Snapping Shrimp! 🌈💥 These incredible underwater creatures are known for their distinctive stripes and asymmetrically large claw that produces a snap. 🌊🐠
📸 Featured Species: Striped Snapping Shrimp
🔎 Habitat: Coastal reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy bottoms
🔬 Size: Typically around 1 inch
💥 Special Ability: For years it was thought that the loud snapping sound was produced by the two claws coming together. New studies using high speed video determined that the snap is produced by the implosion one a cavitation bubble. The noise come milliseconds after claws close.
💡 Did you know? The Striped Snapping Shrimp has an impressive hunting technique. Using their claws, they create shockwaves that stun and immobilize their prey. They are truly nature's own little warriors! Some species have an incredible mutualistic relationship with gobies, a small fish species. The shrimp digs and maintains burrows while the goby serves as a lookout, warning the shrimp of approaching predators. 🐠🦐

Last week Ariana and assisted a pelican in need and got it to Pelican Harbor Sea Bird Station for medical assistance. The pelican had a huge bulge at the neck area. Once they were able to gently catch the pelican, Ariana & Ashley found a very large filleted fish inside the pelican’s pouch. The exposed spines caused multiple lacerations and punctures to the pelican’s pouch. Pelicans eat small to medium fish but they are swallowed whole. The fish are slimy and swallowed easily and then digestion takes over. Let’s spread the word on pelican safe fishing practices. Always discard filleted fish at home or a closed trash bin. See the attached FWC images for more information. If you’d like to support wildlife, please consider donating or volunteering for . A big thanks to for spotting the pelican.

Sea hares are a marine slug or snail without a shell. Did you know that sea hares are very soft bodied and their first line of defense against predators is an acidic mucus that covers their body? This mucus taste pretty bad to most predators. However, they also have the ability to shoot out ink at predators that are persistent. The color of the ink depends on the type of algae the sea hare has been feeding on. Sea hares are one of the many important marine species that feed on algae. With frequent algal blooms due to increase nutrients in coastal waters of South Florida, sea hares play an important role in controlling the algae problem.

Meet the Mangrove Box Jellyfish (Tripedalia cystophora) Don’t worry, this one can’t kill you and it is home to South Florida and the Caribbean. Unlike most jellies, the mangrove box jellyfish is a good swimmer and can swim against the current. This is one of the smallest species of jellyfish species in the world. A full grown adult is about the size of a grape! We found many of these at high tide during one of our last paddles. They also have complex eyes that allow them to swim towards their food.

We spotted a nine armed sea star on our tour today. This one is growing back a few arms. This sea star is a scavenger and a predator. It can engulf it’s prey by everting it’s stomach and swallowing it’s prey whole.

When a manatee uses your kayak as a scratching post. Sometimes manatees are curious and come up to kayaks. Please remember they are a protected species. “Manatees are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978. It is illegal to feed, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, annoy, or molest manatees.” https://buff.ly/3e6mKLS #saltysouladventures #kayak #kayaklife #sealife #kayaking #adventures #ocean #oceanview #oceanlife #explore #guidedtours #standuppaddle #sup #oceanphotography #instaocean #beach #beachlife #saltlife #gooutside #travel #privatetours #grouptour #sunshinestate #florida #southflorida #miami #biscaynebay #ftlauderdale #daniabeach #hollywood
