We believe in giving women and children a voice – primarily young girls’ – in places where resources are scarce. Providing workshops and “Safe Spaces” to women in the community so they can gain confidence and leadership skills. These women take these skills home and share them with their families, creating a ripple effect that keeps on giving.

As we lead up to the International Day of the Girl Child on 11th October, we will be sharing some interesting facts from the UN about the barriers girls and young women face. At our core, GSGC’s goal is to empower young women to break the cycle of poverty, which means addressing the key themes highlighted by the UN.

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

To instil and foster a "giving back culture", is one of the fundamental principles we agree with each of our local partners in Southern Africa. Mentors at Tikobane Girls and Boys Clubs. in Dete, on the border of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, recently shared a great example of what this looks like.

"Our clubs uphold the value of community contribution as a fundamental pillar, with a focus on instilling the cultural ethos of Ubuntu in our youth. Over the weekend, we visited some rural areas, purposefully dismantling societal barriers and dispelling stereotypes. Our boys undertook the task of educating women and young girls on menstrual hygiene, providing them with essential sanitary products. Concurrently, our female members imparted knowledge through book sharing and offered educational support to the children within the community." ~ Mentor Ndlelende Ncube, Tikobane Trust-Zimbabwe . Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving environment. Yet, millions of children around the world still face violence and abuse. It's crucial that we come together to protect our most vulnerable and ensure they receive the love and care they need to thrive.

This commitment is vital in creating a world where every child can feel safe and cherished.

The Zambian government has recently been commended for their efforts towards ending violence against children, however there is still a lot to be done to create a safe and healthy environment for children.

Let’s join forces to make a difference. Stand up against violence, support child protection initiatives, and remember: every child deserves to be loved and cared for.

6.6 Million Zambian Children Facing Severe Deprivation: A Call to Action
The recent Child Poverty Report, a collaborative effort between the Zambian Government and the United Nations, paints a stark picture of childhood deprivation in Zambia. Based on the 2022 Living Conditions Monitoring Survey, the report reveals that a staggering 6.6 million children, or 70.6% of the youth population, are deprived in two or more critical areas of their lives.

Key Findings:
Stunting: 4 out of 10 of children suffer from poor nutrition.
Healthcare Access: 2 out of 3 children cannot access nearby health facilities.
Sanitation:1 in 2 children lack access to proper sanitation facilities,
Water Safety: 1 in 4 children use unsafe water sources.
Education: Boys fall behind girls in educational achievements.
Technology Access: 36% are without communication devices.
Geographic Disparities: Rural children face significantly higher rates of deprivation, where 9 out of 10 children in Western Province experience severe multidimensional poverty.
Vulnerability Factors: Children in large rural households, especially those led by uneducated females, face the highest risks of deprivation, averaging 3.8 deprivations per child compared to 1.1 for those without these risk factors.

Call to Action: This report underscores the urgent need for targeted, multisectoral interventions. We must invest in crucial areas such as nutrition, education, healthcare, and access to clean water and sanitation. Prioritizing these investments will not only address immediate needs but also set a foundation for long-term development and equity.

Let's Transform Data into Action: Leveraging these insights can help shape effective policies and programs that address the unique needs of Zambia's most vulnerable children. It’s time for stakeholders to come together and use this data to drive impactful change.

Together, we can turn the tide on child poverty and create a brighter, more equitable future for every child in Zambia

Empowering Women Through Agriculture in Madagascar.

In the remote village of Ankilinanjosoa, Madagascar, a remarkable transformation is taking place. Women from one of the region's poorest areas are reclaiming their independence and resilience through agriculture. Despite facing persistent droughts that have devastated their harvests, these women are turning their fortunes around with the support of a project backed by UNICEF.

The Story of Tenefo Votsirasoa
Tenefo Votsirasoa, a dedicated member of a local women’s grower’s association, shares how access to reliable irrigation has revolutionized their lives. “With the new irrigation system, we grow maize, courgettes, tomatoes, and more on our 500m² garden. The reliable water source costs us much less compared to buying from the river. This is a game-changer for us,” she explains.

Why Water Matters:
Before this project, obtaining water was a costly and challenging task, hindering their ability to cultivate crops. Thanks to the irrigation system, the women can now consistently water their fields, boosting their crop yields and financial independence. Tenefo notes, “Water is everything. It allows us to grow our own food, sell the surplus, and support our families.”

Empowerment and Independence
The initiative has not only improved their agricultural output but has also provided the women with more financial freedom. “I no longer depend on men for money; I earn and manage my own income. This has brought respect and equality in our community,” Tenefo proudly states.

While the association hasn’t yet achieved full self-sufficiency, the progress made so far is inspiring. The women of Ankilinanjosoa are working towards acquiring their own irrigation pump and continuing to improve their farming practices.

Let’s celebrate the incredible strides these women are making towards financial independence and food security.

Their story is a testament to the empowerment of women!

🌍 Environmental stewardship is essential for the well-being of our community. That’s why our iThuba alumni group has taken action by adopting a street to clean each month.

This initiative has been a powerful learning experience, showing us all the importance of actively protecting our environment. Through their efforts to clear litter and enhance their surroundings, they’ve not only made the neighborhood more beautiful but also contributed to a healthier ecosystem.

They are proud to have partnered with Pristine Victoria Falls Society an organization that shares our commitment to environmental conservation. Together, they’ve made a real difference and set an inspiring example for others in our community. This experience has highlighted the strength of collective action, and we’re excited to continue our journey in environmental advocacy.

The Bigger Impact of a Hunger Crisis

Hunger is more than just an empty stomach; it’s a crisis that affects every aspect of life, and its ripple effects are profound. World Vision's latest report sheds light on the devastating impact of hunger and famine across Africa, revealing how deeply these crises touch lives beyond mere food scarcity.

Key Insights:

Health Implications: Malnutrition weakens immune systems, making individuals, especially children, more susceptible to disease and prolonging recovery from illness.
Educational Setbacks: Hungry children struggle to focus in school, leading to reduced educational outcomes and perpetuating the cycle of poverty.
Economic Challenges: Hunger limits productivity, reduces earning potential, and strains healthcare systems, affecting entire communities and economies.
Social Instability: Scarcity of resources can lead to conflict and displacement, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The hunger crisis in Africa is a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive solutions and global solidarity. By addressing the root causes and investing in sustainable development, we can work towards a future where everyone has access to the nourishment they need to thrive.

Join us in advocating for change, supporting humanitarian efforts, and raising awareness about the far-reaching impacts of hunger. Together, we can make a difference
