Today is #MarineMammalRescue day! 🐬 Marine wildlife is crucial to our world and one way to help is to call your local or regional hotline if you ever notice a stranded marine mammal or sea turtle. Here are some tips from the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration): 1. If you see a stranded marine mammal or sea turtle immediately call your local stranding network and keep people and pets back a safe distance of 50 yards (150 feet). 2. Do not touch or feed the animal. 3. Do not attempt to put the animal back in the water. 4. Observe from a distance and take photos from a distance to determine if the animal has any distinct markings, identification tags, injuries, etc. This will help responders determine the species and the severity of the stranding. No flash photography. 5. Also, make note of the exact location - responders will need to know this to get there as quickly as possible. Remember, if the animal notices you, you are too close. Here are some helpful numbers and organizations to call while visiting us in Emerald Isle: 🌊 NOAA Fisheries Southeast Marine Mammal Stranding Hotline Phone: (877) WHALE-HELP (877-942-5343) 🌊 North Carolina Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network Hotline Phone: (252) 241-7367 🌊 North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries Morehead City, NC Phone: (252) 241-5119 🌊 If you see nesting, hatching, or stranded sea turtles in Emerald Isle, call the EI Police non-emergency number at (252)354-2021. 🌊 Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Patrol is a group of EI volunteers who also help nesting sea turtles throughout the year. You can volunteer at their website if interested in helping at eiseaturtlepatrol.org We hope these tips helped & will make you feel prepared should you ever come across a marine mammal or sea turtle on your next beach trip! Thank you for your help in protecting these amazing creatures!
