It's Sparrow Saturday! Similar to Western North Carolina's Dark-eyed Junco, is the Yellow-eyed Junco of the South West. "In Veracruz, Mexico, native people in the 1860s called the Yellow-eyed Junco the "caster of fire" or the "lightning bird." They believed that their eyes gathered sunlight during the day and released it at night." (AllAboutBirds).

VENTURES NEWSLETTER PART TWO:
Back to our winter calendar, owls feature larger than life on our Minnesota tour and you can read more about it here and below.

A trip to northern Minnesota in the dead of winter is the best time of year to see the highly-sought after northern owls (Great Gray, Snowy, Northern Hawk, and sometimes Boreal and Northern Saw-whet). The list of winter finches adds additional highlights with Common & Hoary Redpolls, Pine & Evening Grosbeaks, and Red Crossbill all possible. Winter provides a much better chance of seeing things like Spruce Grouse, in addition to the expected gamut of Canada Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, Northern Shrike, Bohemian Waxwing and more. Join Michael Werndly on this annual winter owl experience.

Join Ventures guide Mike Werndly to experience some great winter birding.

Our Day Trips will start again in January 2025 and are already being posted on our website. We will be offering about 4-5 per month and yes, it will be good to get out birding in our local areas once again. All of our International and longer within country trips are still running. Please feel free to email us at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Thanks and we hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Simon Thompson

VENTURES NEWSLETTER PART ONE:
Last month we outlined the wonderful work done by Ventures guide, Clifton Avery, as he organized supplies and aid coming into ravaged areas of Western North Carolina. This month, another Ventures guide, Vicky Burke, was in Massachusetts this fall sorting out her late mother's estate, but she still managed to do some birding and spent time observing some Saw-whet Owl banding with the Berkshire Bird Observatory.

Seeing a Northern Saw-whet Owl is always a challenge as they are small and inconspicuous. It's very hard to find them in the breeding season and the best bet is to find a bird on its winter roost. Another great opportunity to observe them close-up is to visit a banding station during their southbound migration during the fall and this is what Vicky just did.

The Berkshire Bird Observatory has been monitoring and banding Saw-whets for 3 years during October and November with the best conditions being clear and cold with no wind. During perfect weather they may catch up to 20 per night, but the night that Vicky attended, it was just the solo first-year female bird that was banded. Once captured, the owls are banded, the data collected on age, s*x, body condition and molt before they are released them back into the night sky.

According to the Berkshire Bird Observatory, "Saw-whet Owls are pure magic: they’re cute and fierce, fluffy and profound. They even glow in the dark (fluoresce under UV). Bringing people out for owl banding is one of our favorite things to do—these little owls have a big impact on people who get to see them." You can read more about their work at:

It's Tropical Tuesday! Here's a new take on a Black-throated Blue Warbler, which many of us are used to seeing in Western North Carolina during the breeding season. This bird is a neo-tropical migrant which migrates at night to the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and occasionally the Caribbean coast of Mexico and Central America. This photo from Ventures, was actually taken on its wintering ground - Cuba!
Here's how to join us on our next Venture to Cuba...
