It's Sparrow Saturday! Similar to Western North Carolina's Dark-eyed Junco, is the Yellow-eyed Junco of the South West. "In Veracruz, Mexico, native people in the 1860s called the Yellow-eyed Junco the "caster of fire" or the "lightning bird." It's Sparrow Saturday! Here's a Black-throated Sparrow from Arizona. They live in semiopen areas with evenly spaced shrubs and trees that are 3 - 10 feet tall and also occur as high as 7,000 feet elevation in pinyon-juniper forests. (All About Birds).
