The Onion House has gone through the new Hawaii County permitting process and is now a fully permitted and legal short term rental. In accordance with County Regulations, I am posting the required verbiage for all digital representations of The Onion House:

Please note that the County of Hawai'i has implemented new vacation rental regulations. The Onion House has been officially licensed by the County. Common sense rules apply to guests:
(A) Quiet hours shall be from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., during which time the noise from the STVR shall not unreasonably disturb adjacent neighbors.
(B) Sound that is audible beyond the property boundaries during non-quiet hours shall not be more excessive than would be otherwise associated with a residential area.
(C) Guest vehicles shall be parked in the designated onsite parking area.
(D) The STVR shall not be used for commercial purposes.
The STVR Registration Number is: STVR-19-361289
The Nonconforming Use Certificate Number is: NUC-19-1205
("Nonconforming" basically means that our vacation rental is not located in a resort zone.)

Lately, guests have been remarking about the beautiful blue skies and crystal views..........

A pall of seemingly unrelenting vog swallowed West Hawaii for months as Kilauea wreaked havoc in Puna. Since the volcano has cooled, the excess pollution subsided. But the changes are actually more significant than that.

So, friends of the Onion -- despite all the news, just wanted to share that over on the west side, things continue on pretty much as normal. There has been some intermittent vog, but that is normal for us in recent years. Here's a great article to put things in perspective. West side, pretty normal. East side --- prayers to individuals living in the active volcanic area of the island whose homes are in danger!

Volcanoes are a top motivation for why many travelers visit the Hawaiian Islands. But for the past week, headlines of a volcanic eruption, lava flows, and hundreds of earthquakes on the Big Island of Hawaii have given plenty of travelers a reason to reconsider their plans.

Tonight was something special. We had out of town guests, hosted them here at The Onion House.......and went on the Manta Ray night dive with Big Island Divers. Folks - here to tell you --- it's a life-list experience. No words. The Manta Rays were unreal --- and while each night is different, this is a company committed in every detail to ecological, sustainable enjoyment with utmost customer service. Thanks to CPT James and crew/dive leaders Jade and Leo. This night lives on our life list. If you come to the Big Island of Hawaii -- do this.

We did a fantastic night dive with Manta Rays last night with Big Island Divers in Kona, Hawaii. Definitely a "must see" experience!

Something unique and fun to do this coming weekend......

WAILEA VILLAGE 20th ANNUAL MOCHI POUNDING
December 30, 8AM-2PM.
A traditional Japanese mochi-pounding event that started with 23 people, mostly neighbors that now welcomes between 600-700 people.
Location: Akiko's Buddhist B&B, Hakalau.
Free to the public.

Saturday is the Mochi Pounding celebration, making traditional rice cakes the "old-fashioned" way: everyone takes their turn at pounding the glutinous sticky rice for good luck. Fire building starts at 7 a.m. to steam the rice. Hearty local-style lunches will be available for $5. New years crafts, food vendors, fortune telling, massage, I Ching readings, floral arrangements, plantation stories, Okinawan taiko drumming, Hawaiian entertainment and more. Santa has notified us that our domed roof is making it somewhat difficult for his Prep and Landing team to get The Onion House ready for Santa's Christmas Visit..........we are looking for alternative landing solutions for Santa........any ideas? Freezing the pool is decidedly out........

One of the things I love most about spending time at The Onion House is the wildlife in the area. From the brilliant geckos to some fun birds, it's a little natural oasis with an amazing view.

I couldn’t possibly have conjured up a better couple to take on the Onion House. Harry’s a structural engineer who has designed and built several homes from the ground up. The first home was built with a small cement mixer very much like the one Ken Kellogg used to construct the Onion House, following plans he drew by hand. Harry tells me he’s ‘not afraid to get his hands dirty.’ Barbara’s an art collector who was also instrumental in running their business. Harry’s an inventor who holds over 30 patents, several of which form the basis of the automatic pool cover business they built Two of their three kids and several of their grandkids now work for this family business. One of the things I respect about them is that they’re completely self-made… Harry had to quit school in 10th grade to support his 6 younger siblings, but then went back to school after he and Barbara were married.
The kids are all very keen on the Onion House, so I feel that it has a good likelihood of being well-maintained into the future. Harry and Barbara own several vacation rentals on the beach on Oahu, so they know that business too, and plan to keep the crew and rentals going here as well.
I’m very happy to know them… very down-to-earth people.
